Guests say

Fir Tree Cottage in Ambleside is highly praised for its excellent location, comfort, and well-equipped facilities. Guests appreciate the property's character, cosy atmosphere, and the convenience of having good walks and local amenities within easy reach. The enclosed garden is a hit with pet owners, and the property's charm adds to the overall positive experience.

Most guests found Fir Tree Cottage to be clean and well-maintained, with only a few isolated comments about cleanliness in certain areas. The positive remarks about the state of the bathrooms and bedrooms suggest a high standard of cleanliness overall.

The location of Fir Tree Cottage is consistently lauded for its proximity to Grasmere, local pubs, and walking routes. The quiet setting and ease of access to the Lake District's attractions contribute to its high rating.

Guests frequently mention the comfortable beds and cosy living spaces, with the cottage providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The presence of large baths and a wood burner adds to the comfort level, although there are some remarks about a soft mattress and the need for a non-bath shower option.

The cottage is praised for its well-equipped kitchen and spacious bathrooms. However, there are comments about the need for better outdoor lighting, a slippery shower, and minor maintenance issues like a leaking roof and smoke detector problems, which slightly lower the score.

While guests appreciate the property's charm and equipment, there is insufficient information to assess the level of thoughtfulness in terms of gifts or special touches. No reviews mention gifts, so it cannot be guaranteed and the score is set to null.

About this property

Resting on a sleepy lane within the scenic village of Grasmere, is the charming and traditional dwelling of Fir Tree Cottage. Surrounded by the beautiful vistas of the Lake District National Park, this homely abode provides an idyllic base for a family or group of six seeking an incredible adventure in the great outdoors. Spend cold winter evenings snuggled up to loved ones in the warm and inviting sitting room, watching movies on the flat-screen TV whilst flames flicker within the striking woodburning stove. Cross the gorgeous slate floors over to the farmhouse kitchen, home to a plethora of appliances and utensils that lie within the stunning oak cabinets, all of which can be used to help rustle up some delicious home-cooked meals throughout your stay.

Serve up at the lovely kitchen table or gather with friends in the dining room for a more formal set up. Completing the ground floor is an airy bathroom with a large P-shaped tub and an overhead shower, so that you can choose to start your mornings with a relaxing soak or a brisk rinse. Two staircases will lead you up to an additional bathroom hosting an impressive roll top bath, as well as three bedrooms consisting of a king-size, a super-king and a twin. Outside, a pretty garden with outdoor seating offers a tranquil space to unwind with a book and a refreshing glass of wine as you delight in a moment of peace and quiet following a fun-filled day in the countryside.

Grasmere is one of the few places in the UK where you can still find red squirrels and you can often spot these delightful creatures when staying at the cottage. The owners support the Grasmere Red Squirrel Group with a donation for every week the cottage is booked. No visit to Grasmere is complete without some scenic fell walking, and the nearby Helm Crag provides some exceptional views of the encompassing landscapes. More experienced hikers should be sure to explore Helvellyn, Fairfield, Red Screes and Scafell Pike, whilst even the most novice of walkers will enjoy an afternoon in Green Gable.

Fun is to be had at attractions such as Treetop Lake District and Puzzling Place, and visitors should be sure to meet the exotic creatures of the Lake District Wildlife Park. Learn of the life of William Wordsworth with tours of the historical Wordsworth Grasmere and Rydal Mount & Gardens, both former places of residence for the famous poet, and see the ancient remains of Ambleside Roman Fort and the imposing Neo-gothic fortress of Wray Castle. With so much at your fingertips, it’s little wonder that Fir Tree Cottage makes a splendid choice for any holiday to the Lake District.

Situated in the heart of the Lake District National Park is the lovely village of Grasmere, probably best known as the home of William Wordsworth, a place he once described as "The most loveliest spot that man hath found". Any visit to Grasmere needs to include The Grasmere Gingerbread shop, where the Wilson family have been making gingerbread for over 60 years. Also in the village are a number of shops, pubs, a church which dates back to the 13th century and Grasmere Lake, plus Grasmere Sports takes place every August, where you can watch participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland Wrestling. Just five miles away is the town of Ambleside and Lake Winderemere where you will find shops, pubs, restaurants and the 17th century Bridge House, which is one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District. Cruises, boat trips and watersports can all be enjoyed on Lake Windermere and the towns of Windermere and Keswick are also within driving distance. Grasmere is a wonderful base for your Lake District retreat.

It is well placed for walking into Grasmere and has good views from the windows. The kitchen is very well appointed and beds are comfortable.

It is incredibly well-equipped with everything you could need: We like cooking for ourselves most nights and for the first time, we had a cottage with sharp knives. Another example of how this place gets the small things right is that they did not scrimp on the dishwasher tablets which is always annoying when you run out on holiday and end up hand washing everything. The fire was very cosy and the beds were luxuriously comfortable. One thing you should bring on the trip are slippers: all of the ground floor is stone which could give you cold feet in the morning.
