Guests say

Butt Hill Cottage in Troutbeck is praised for its stunning views, cleanliness, and ideal location for walking and exploring the Lake District. Guests appreciate the cosy atmosphere, dog-friendly policy, and proximity to local pubs. Some minor maintenance issues and the need for updates are noted, but the overall experience is highly regarded, with many repeat visitors.

The cottage generally receives high marks for cleanliness, with several reviews mentioning it being 'very clean' and 'spotlessly clean'. However, there are isolated comments about the need for better cleaning of certain items, which slightly impacts the score.

The location is highly praised for its tranquillity, proximity to good pubs, and walking opportunities right from the door. The stunning views and peaceful village setting contribute to a high score in this category.

Guests find the cottage cosy and warm, with comfortable sofas and a homely feel. However, there are complaints about the quality of the mattresses and pillows, suggesting room for improvement in this area.

The cottage is well-equipped with kitchen facilities and a welcome pack. However, there are several mentions of maintenance issues such as a temperamental shower control, dishwasher, and washing machine, which affect the score.

Guests mention welcome packs and the provision of logs, indicating thoughtfulness. However, as these gifts are not consistently mentioned by all reviewers, it is politely noted that such gestures, while appreciated, are not guaranteed for every stay.

Open plan living / dining room features oak beamed ceilings, panoramic windows on three sides, feature stone fireplace with multifuel stove, and a door to the furnished patio garden. Even the kitchen enjoys stunning views, with slate floors, classic wooden units and access to the shared utility room. 3rd WC on ground floor. The Troutbeck Valley sits at the start of the dramatic Kirkstone Pass, is a haven of peaceful grazing land, scattered rural homes and pretty woodlands surrounded by many walks. Leading north toward Brotherswater & Ullwater, and south to Windermere & Bowness. So despite your blissful seclusion, you are close to a fabulous selection of cafes, shops, bars, restaurants, walks galore and lake cruises.

The village of Troutbeck, has the excellent Mortal Man pub, and the Queens Head Inn, both renowned for their locally sourced food and accompanied by real Lakeland ales. In the village is the National Trust Townend House & Garden, for a quintessential trip back in time to how the Farming family of the Brownes lived, and a lovely local church. There is also a small local shop serving coffee and bakery.

The small Lakeland village of Troutbeck can be found between its more famous neighbours Windermere and Ambleside, close by the Kirkstone Pass. A mixture of houses, cottages and farms, the village is scattered along a narrow lane bordered by a drystone wall. Many of these buildings date back to the 17th Century with features such as mullioned windows and heavy cylindrical chimneys and the northern end boasts its own 17th century inn. Close by, the bustling towns of Windermere and Ambleside are popular with visitors, providing a range of amenities to suit all tastes. Lake Windermere offers boat trips, including the lakeside ferry to the Lakeside Aquarium and Grizedale Forest Park. The ‘Windermere Steamboat Museum’ displays a fascinating collection of boats whilst children will enjoy the ‘World of Beatrix Potter’ in Bowness, where technology brings her characters to life. It’s got everything that you need, tried to book for next new year, but it was already booked.

Plenty of wood provided for the fire, not that we used it as it was very warm and cosy within. Kitchen is well equipped and a nice welcome pack provided upon arrival is a nice touch. My only, critique, and it's been mentioned previously in other reviews, is the beds, particularly the double bed is totally knackered and desperately needs replacing, along with the pillows. A shame really, as it's a quick and easy fix, but left me with significant back and neck pain, which is not something I suffer with at home. A replacement bed would see me booking again, but unless it's changed, then unfortunately I wouldn't stay again, a real shame as I holiday in Troutbeck at least three times a year.

The kitchen equipment, the cutlery and crockery all matched and was good quality. Thank you for the very generous Welcome pack of food and logs for the fire, all much appreciated.
