Brampton is a good base for visiting Hadrian's Wall. The town's history dates back to the Romans, Border reivers from Scotland, and Jacobite uprisings. Bonnie Prince Charlie established his headquarters in one of Brampton's old buildings. Moot Hall, built in 1817, now houses the Tourist Information Centre. To the east of the town is a 135-foot motte with a statue of the 7th Earl of Carlisle. Talkin Tarn Country Park is outside Brampton. It covers 120 acres of farmland and woodland, 65 of which make up the 10,000-year-old Tarn. Gelt Woods is an ancient woodland and rspb nature reserve two miles away. Brampton is a great base for exploring this scenic area.
