In a wonderful location for discovering the myriad delights of three renowned Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty – the Eden Valley, Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales – this charming pair of holiday cottages stand adjacent to the owners’ home and provide quirky and characterful accommodation. Cruck End (ref E3749) has retained the original cruck beams, whilst Swallow’s Nest (ref E3245) was formerly the waggon house. This area affords fell walking, bird watching, riding, cycling and fishing, whilst Appleby, just 2 miles away, host to the gypsy horse fair in June, offers golf, a swimming pool and bowls as well as shops, inns and eating places. Penrith, with cycle hire and the Rheged Centre, is 10 miles, Hadrian’s Wall an hour’s drive.

Cruck End is very dated, it's like a 1980's themed cottage really. The bad bits for us were the living room, which has a very old two seater sofa and two chairs (one reclines!) and two really awful dark brown wing backed chairs, that were very uncomfortable and must be at least 40 to 45 years old. The TV in that room is also dated and is far too small to view comfortably, there is a DVD player also.The kitchen is very basic and although around the 1980 mark, the fridge does work well. There's no freezer however in there, that's kept in the porch, naturally...The one bathroom upstairs is pretty bad, the floorboards are loose around the toilet pan (which isn't very secure) and the whole floor squeaks so loudly that at night it wakes up everybody. The bath is very unusual, you step up into it and down again once in it and the shower is a bit hit and miss as well.The bed we slept in was a double four poster, which felt as though the middle was raised somehow, this gave us the impression we were going to roll out of bed, thankfully we didn't. The other rooms were okay.The whole place needs redecorating, a new kitchen and bathroom, some decent, comfortable seats, as well as a decent size TV and it would be ok, the owners could then ask for more money per stay. As it is, £600 all in for a week is probably pushing it a bit.Good points to the cottage was that it was clean, the WiFi was good and hot water was excellent. The owner was a nice chap, we didn't see his Wife unfortunately and the area was very pretty, they just need to update the place and it would be better for their guests.We wouldn't return, but would return to the area as it is very beautiful.

A really spacious cottage. A quiet location within easy reach of many places. The owners are very friendly always spoke when they saw you making sure everything was good for your stay. The only thing we found to be inconvenienant was the bath. It has a step/seat in it and you had to use the shower to wash your hair. A small inconvenience.
