To the west of Appleby is the Lake District whose northern and central lakes are within easy reach, and to the east lie the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The historic town of Appleby-in-Westmorland is situated on a loop of the River Eden and is overlooked by the Pennine range. The town offers shops and pubs, along with a Norman Castle, a medieval Church and a horse fair in June. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, and within reach are both the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks.
