Along with spectacular hikes, you can hop on two wheels or travel by horseback along country lanes and a rolling landscape. The local village has family-friendly activities too including a playground and tennis courts. Watch butterflies and birdlife at Smardale Gill nature reserve (3.5 miles); set on an old railway line with the backdrop of a viaduct, it’s made for memorable holiday photos.
