Tucked away in the small town of Brough, Cumbria, is this large five-bedroom home, Glenwood House. Enjoying a superb location within Eden Valley at the foot of the North Pennines AONB and offering easy access to the national parks of the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, Glenwood House is an exceptional family-friendly base for 10, plus their canine companion. Step into the kitchen/diner where you can rustle up mouth-watering dishes, ready to be enjoyed at the spacious dining table for 10 in front of the crackling woodburning stove. Further amenities can be found in the utility area which houses three fridge/freezers, a dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer. There is a cloakroom for your convenience. Unwind in the generous sitting room where you can enjoy a family favourite on the projector style TV, as your pooch settles in front of the warming open fire. Climb the stairs to the first floor, where you can freshen up after a day of exploring with a hot shower or a bubble bath in the beautiful freestanding bath. Tuck the little ones up in the children’s bunk room, before choosing from three well-presented double bedrooms on this floor. The final bedroom can be found on the second floor, a twin with zip/link and gorgeous en-suite free-standing bath, ideal for those who like a little more privacy. Explore your local surroundings, where nearby you will find the welcoming Golden Fleece, The Inn at Brough, and The Outfitters Café Bar, ideal for those evening’s when you fancy a night off from the kitchen. The budding historians in your party will delight at the close proximity of the stunning English Heritage, Brough Castle, built on the site of the old Roman fort of Veteris. After a day of walking, give your legs a break and hop aboard the heritage Eden Valley Railway, where you can enjoy the breathtaking countryside views as you make your way between towns. Head to Kirkby Stephen where you can tuck into fresh fish and chips from Coast to Coast or settle down for a traditional pub lunch at The Taggy Man, followed by a leisurely stroll along the River Eden. The market town of Appleby-in-Westmorland is a short drive away and is home to the Grade II* Listed St Anne’s Hospital and the delightful Courtyard Gallery. Venture into the Yorkshire Dales National Park, where you can enjoy the delights of Lammerside Castle, Cautley Spout, the imposing peaks of Whenside and Ingleborough and Grassholme Observatory. After you’ve conquered the Dales, head to the Lakes for a memorable day of watersports at the famous Lake Windermere, soak up amazing views of the Langdale Pikes from Orrest Head and Queen Adelaide’s Hill, visit the former home of William Wordsworth or explore the wildlife rich Bassenthwaite Lake National Nature Reserve. The possibilities are endless with a stay at Glenwood House.
Brough is a small town in the Eden Valley, roughly four miles north of Kirkby Stephen and eight miles east of Appleby-in-Westmorland, at the foot of the North Pennines. Church Brough, on a former Roman road, was the backdrop for Norman Brough Castle (formerly the site of a Roman camp), while Market Brough, on a mediaeval route, is a twin settlement. The contrast between the two settlements is due to the duties they originally performed; Church Brough's dwellings are centred on a market square with a maypole, whereas Market Brough has a long and wide main street. The village's claim to fame stems from its role as a coaching town for the England-Scotland route in the 18th and 19th centuries, when more than ten inns served to the stagecoach trade.
