Guests say

South Lodge offers a spacious and comfortable base for exploring Berwick-upon-Tweed and the surrounding countryside, with beautiful walks and an enclosed garden ideal for dogs. Guests praise the peaceful location, well-equipped kitchen, and proximity to local attractions such as Paxton House and its café. While some mention areas needing attention, such as tired décor and occasional maintenance issues, the majority found the cottage cosy and relaxing, with responsive staff when contacted. The setting and grounds are frequently highlighted as standout features, making it a popular choice for a restful getaway.

Several guests found the cottage clean and fresh, but others noted issues such as marked walls, mould in the bathroom, and a need for more thorough cleaning in places like the fridge and doors. Cleanliness appears generally acceptable but with room for improvement.

The location is consistently praised for its tranquillity, beautiful grounds, and convenience for touring the area. Guests appreciated being able to walk to local attractions, the nearby pub, and the abundance of scenic walks.

Most guests found the cottage comfortable, with a cosy atmosphere, comfortable beds, and plenty of space for one or two people. Some mentioned it could be cold at times and noted minor issues with heating, but overall comfort was rated highly.

The cottage is generally well-equipped, especially the kitchen, but some facilities are dated or in need of maintenance, such as the oven, hob, and TV. Issues with heating, hot water, and minor safety concerns were mentioned, though staff were responsive when contacted.

There are no mentions of welcome gifts or extra thoughtful touches in the reviews, so a score cannot be provided for this category.

Great comfortable cottage, good location with lovely walks around the estate and excellent food at the Stables Cafe. We highlighted to one of the gardeners who was working nearby that we had noticed a wasp nest in the eaves of the cottage. He returned that evening to deal with the issue, excellent service.
