With the delights of Buxton on the doorstep, Compton Lodge offers a fantastic retreat where you can cosy up together, enjoy some quality time and yet be just a few minutes from the vibrant action of the town centre of Buxton. Park up in the allocated parking space and unpack with ease, walking into the delightful open-plan studio. Big windows let the light flood in and there’s an attractive sofa and armchair arranged in front of the TV, perfect for curling up together in the evening and enjoying some downtime. Step into the immaculately-presented kitchen with feature vaulted ceiling above, where you will find everything needed to create fantastic food for your loved one and they can even keep you company while you rustle up dinner, by taking a seat at the breakfast bar. You can imagine sitting together side by side at the breakfast bar, tucking into hearty, romantic meals together and planning your next day’s activities. Before bed, why not head into the sumptuous bathroom with its feature brick wall, and have a long relaxing soak in the freestanding bath? If you’re more of a shower person, then jump under the shower for a quick refresh before heading out. Come bedtime and you can sink into the elegant double bed which is all set up ready for its guests. After a night of recharging your batteries, you’ll be raring to go to discover the wonders of Buxton and beyond. Stroll into the distinctive town centre known for its impressive semi-circular Crescent as well as a great range of shops and eateries. Check out the Pavilion Gardens and the Opera House, not just for the fantastic programme of events here, but also just for the wonderful architecture. The surrounding area is a mecca for walkers with gentle hills and countryside to the north and wind-swept dales to the south. Villages worth calling in at along the way include Bakewell, Ashford-in-the-Water, Castleton and Edale. There are more country houses than you can shake a stick at in the area including Chatsworth House, Peveril Castle and Haddon Hall. Attractions worth visiting close to Buxton include Go Ape, Crich Tramway Village, Blaze Farm and Alton Towers. Compton Lodge is a wonderful base from which to explore the captivating Peak District.

The eight thermal springs in Buxton have a constant temperature of 28 degrees centigrade, which is what first drew the Romans to the area. The beautiful semicircular Crescent, The Great Stable, Hall Bank, The Square, The Pavilion Gardens, and The Opera House were all conceived and constructed during the 18th and 19th centuries, though, under the patronage of succeeding Dukes of Devonshire.

These spectacular structures and grounds, as well as the Opera House's full schedule and yearly festivals of music and the arts, are still enjoyed by visitors today.

With rocky peaks to the north, pleasant hills and dales to the south, and a number of charming villages, there is wonderful walking to be had. Villages worth checking out include Edale, Ashford-in-the-Water, Castleton and Bakewell with loads of attractive stately homes to be admired including Haddon Hall and the infamous Chatsworth House.

There are a few issues like, no basin in the bathroom and the bed is a little high, making it difficult to get out of. None of this changed the overall enjoyment of our stay.

The lack of wash basin in the bathroom was surmountable but it did seem strange washing in the kitchen sink! The bed was comfortable enough but too high for us and with one side against a wall it was difficult for us (reasonably active 75 year olds) to get in and out. The wind rattled the adjacent up and over garage door ensuring disturbed nights. The accommodation was warm when we arrived but the boiler broke down and needed replacing. We were offered a refund if we wanted to curtail our holiday, which we did, but nothing has been received yet after nearly a month. I've left completing this review for 3 weeks hoping I could be more positive but I can't as I have heard no more from the owner. On the plus side the on site manager was helpful and provided additional electric heating.
