These exceptional historic cottages have undergone meticulous conversion from the outbuildings of the Grade II* listed Torr Vale Mill, a site that once proudly held the title of England’s longest continuous working mill from 1785 to 2000. Nestled in a deep valley along the banks of the River Goyt, each cottage possesses a distinct character and preserves captivating remnants of its industrial heritage.
The cottage in focus was originally the living quarters of the full-time fireman responsible for maintaining a constant fire in the boiler room when the mill transitioned to steam power. This charming conversion situates the light and comfortable bedrooms on the ground floor, while the main living area, positioned upstairs, offers breathtaking views of the iconic mill and the flowing River Goyt. A brief stroll past the imposing chimney stack leads to the award-winning Millennium Walkway—a 160 m-long cantilevered marvel that winds through the rugged gritstone gorge at Torrs, New Mills. This area, renowned for its exceptional natural beauty and unique industrial archaeological heritage, provides a picturesque backdrop for exploration.
Perched on the northwest edge of the Peak District, New Mills is a thriving town adorned with a variety of restaurants, cafes, and pubs. Its proximity to the National Park ensures easy access to an array of beautiful towns and villages like Edale, Castleton, and Hope, all reachable within around 30 minutes. The National Trust’s Lyme Park awaits approximately 20 minutes away, while Eyam, Bakewell, and the grand Chatsworth House are all within a 40-minute drive. For us this was the best property location I have stayed in. For my husband myself and my dog reactive collie. The living part being upstairs stopped her seeing passing dogs. The garden is a short walk from the house but that was fine as Brooke never likes to be away from me. Beds were very comfortable. Wooden flooring in the living is brilliant for dogs. We brought our own throws for the furniture to stop dog hair. Kitchen is basic but everything you need. Only a two minute walk is a pub/bistro, brilliant for food and drink. The walks from the house is unbelievable you can walk a different place every day, which we did and only ten minutes to the centre of town and Sainsbury's. The area is amazing. Used the car twice. I will definitely be returning.

Beautifully situated cottage for exploring the surrounding area. The old building has a lot of charm and character. The stairs in the building and the hilly terrain mean it wouldn't suit anybody with mobility issues, so it's important to check the surroundings if that might be a problem.

A lovely listed building in tranquil setting. Steep stairs which are to be expected in older property. Extremely well equipped. Property heated to a comfortable setting, the bedroom downstairs was cool in the early hours (probably noticeable due to my health condition) very thick walls as an old building. We had lunch in the Torr Vale Tap which was delicious. Many cafes and bars near by, the Rock Tavern is 2 minutes walk. Local people were friendly and helpful giving advice on the area.It is very steep and many steps when walking on public footpaths to village centre.A small bakery around the corner has fabulous sandwiches and cakes.Look forward to another visit.
