The Retreat is a characterful cottage in the charming village of Appledore, appreciated for its location and quaintness. Guests enjoy the proximity to local amenities, the enclosed courtyard, and the cosy atmosphere. While some find the kitchen small and the property in need of TLC, the overall experience is positive, with many guests having a pleasant stay.
Cleanliness scores are mixed, with several guests finding the property unclean, mentioning issues like dog hair and a need for a thorough cleaning. However, some reviews note the property as spotless, indicating inconsistency in cleaning standards.
The location is highly praised for its convenience to local shops, pubs, and the waterfront. The quiet, central setting in Appledore and proximity to parking areas contribute to the high score.
Comfort receives a moderate score. Guests find the beds comfortable and the cottage cosy, but note thin walls and a small kitchen. The property's character adds to the comfort for some, while others find the space constraints less comfortable.
Facilities and maintenance are seen as adequate but in need of improvement. Guests mention functional amenities and thoughtful touches, but also highlight issues with appliances, the need for refurbishment, and minor maintenance concerns.
Thoughtfulness is evidenced by mentions of welcome gifts such as tea, coffee, and biscuits. While these gestures are appreciated, they are not consistently reported by all guests, and future visitors should note that such amenities are a bonus rather than a guarantee.
Appledore 0.3 miles. This lovely cottage is situated on the outskirts of the fishing village of Appledore in Devon. The cottage is full of character, and with its original sash windows and old wooden beamed ceilings you feel you are stepping back in time as you arrive. Located up a tiny, quiet lane off one of the old narrow village streets in Appledore, it is ideally situated for friends and family wishing to tour the North Devon coast. There is an open plan living area with a well-equipped kitchen, dining area and sitting area with electric fire. The family bathroom is also on the ground floor, and up the open wooden staircase to the first floor is where you will find the two individual, well-furnished comfortable bedrooms. Outside the cottage is a delightful private courtyard where you can sit in peace with a drink or two and reflect on the day. With its maze of quaint narrow streets full of old fishermen's cottages, Appledore has something for everybody, with a great range of shops, pubs and restaurants. Less than a minute from the cottage and you are right on the beach and next to an excellent children's playground, making it the perfect place for the family to spend the day. This cottage is such an ideal peaceful base to explore North Devons surf beaches and ancient market towns, and is the perfect spot for a well-earned break at any time of year.
