On the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset, two miles west of Swanage and five miles south-east of Corfe Castle, is the picturesque village of Langton Matravers. Matravers derives from the name of the Lord who originally lived there, while Langton comes from the phrase "long town." The Langton Matravers Museum presents the town's local history and paints a detailed picture of the methods for mining and utilising the local stone. Numerous walking routes pass through the village, including the "Smugglers Way," which starts in Worth Matravers and travels down to the coast path before returning to see the locations where smugglers were rumoured to have brought their contraband ashore. A convenience store and a typical village tavern, which holds an annual Stone Carving and Pumpkin Festival, are also located in the village.
