About this property

The Hay Barn is a pleasant family-friendly cottage set in the village of Grewelthorpe, North Yorkshire, within the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Boasting tranquil views, a toasty woodburning stove and allows pets making it a great base for families and friends looking to explore this beautiful part of the county. You approach the property along a down track, parking up on the gravel before taking in the neatly bricked exterior, which sits neatly within its rural surroundings. At the front, an enclosed garden with lawn and a picnic bench offers an inviting first impression, a handy space to pause, unload the car, and let children and dogs stretch their legs before heading indoors. Stepping inside, you enter the kitchen and dining area, where tiled flooring creates a practical space for everyday living. Mornings begin here with the kettle on and plans for the day taking shape around the table, while evenings are spent preparing home-cooked meals using the electric oven and hob. As the light fades, the woodburning stove becomes a natural focal point, bringing warmth and atmosphere to relaxed dinners and long conversations. From the kitchen, the sitting room provides a welcoming place to slow down. Wooden flooring runs underfoot, with sofas and armchairs arranged for unwinding after a day outdoors. The mounted Smart TV offers easy entertainment, while the room invites you to settle in with a book or enjoy a film as the evening draws in. The ground floor also hosts the twin bedroom, well placed for children or friends, along with the shower room where a walk-in shower offers a refreshing start to the morning or a soothing end to the day. Upstairs, the double bedroom feels tucked away and restful, with space to unpack and switch off before another day exploring the Dales. Throughout the cottage, underfloor heating and gas central heating keep the spaces welcoming whatever the season, while thoughtful touches such as WiFi and family-friendly equipment make settling in effortless. Outside, the enclosed front garden becomes an extension of the living space, ideal for outdoor meals at the picnic bench while the lawn provides a safe area for children and pets to enjoy. A welcoming village pub can be reached on foot, with a local shop found a short drive away, while the nearby towns of Masham and Ripon offer further choice for days out, eating out, and browsing independent shops. The surrounding area is rich with places to explore, all within easy reach. At Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden, you can wander among dramatic ruins, follow elegant pathways beside still water, and enjoy wide views across landscaped parkland. Brimham Rocks offers a striking landscape of weather-shaped stone formations, open moorland walks, and viewpoints that reward a steady climb with sweeping scenery. Aysgarth Falls brings the sound and sight of tumbling water, woodland trails that change with the seasons, and classic Yorkshire Dales views that invite you to linger. The Hay Barn in Grewelthorpe offers a welcoming base for discovering North Yorkshire, combining village life with access to some of the region’s most memorable landscapes.

Dominated by its large market square, which still boasts a lively Friday market, the bustling town of Leyburn is known as the ‘Gateway to Wensleydale’, with beautiful views from its western edge across the Dale. The town has much to offer with its many craft shops, galleries and tea rooms. There are many lovely walks for all abilities in this beautiful area, as well as delightful villages to explore. Also within easy reach are many other attractions, notably the Constable Burton Hall Gardens with extensive parkland and woodland walks, the Forbidden Corner with its underground passages to explore, and of course the lovely Georgian town of Richmond with its fine castle ruins.
