About this property

Tarn House is a well-presented retreat resting in Hawes, North Yorkshire. Offering an appealing base for friends and families seeking a stay within the outstanding surroundings of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, this pet-friendly abode boasts a toasty woodburning stove and serene views. When you arrive at Tarn House, the generous parking gives you time to pause and take in the character of this attractive semi-detached old farmhouse, resting in a rural spot a short journey from Hawes and surrounded by long-reaching views of the fells. As you step through the porchway, the small cloakroom tucked neatly ahead offers a practical touch before you move further inside.

The hallway leads you toward the sitting room, where beams line the ceiling, and an exposed stone fireplace surrounds the woodburning stove, drawing you to ease into a seat after time spent exploring the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Step into the formal dining room where a large table and beams overhead invite everyone to gather for meals that stretch into the evening. From here, the kitchen draws you in with its tiled surfaces, wooden fixtures and generous layout. It is the kind of space where you can spread out ingredients, reach easily for everything you need and feel the room working with you as you prepare food after days spent exploring the Dales.

Artwork placed along the staircase catches your attention as you pass, guiding you towards a large upstairs window that frames a beautiful sweep of the surrounding landscape. Upstairs, each bedroom brings its own character. The king-size room feels especially charming with its pretty patterned wallpaper, setting a warm tone for unwinding. The double room includes a built-in wardrobe and a window that opens towards the fells, drawing the outdoors gently into the room. The additional double benefits from an en-suite, where you can step into the walk-in shower to refresh at your own pace. A separate bathroom with bath and shower over offers another restful place to begin or end the day, while the ground-floor cloakroom ensures convenience for guests.

Outside, the garden at the rear offers a pleasant corner to pause with a drink or plan the day ahead while taking in the countryside air. It feels perfectly in keeping with the farmhouse setting, giving you a simple but appealing outdoor space that complements the home. Hawes lies within easy reach, offering shops and a friendly pub, and the nearby river path makes an effortless introduction to the scenery that surrounds the town. Within an hour of Tarn House, you can enjoy memorable days out across the Yorkshire Dales. At Aysgarth Falls, the river spreads over limestone steps, where woodland paths curl through shifting light and birdsong accompanies your walk.

Richmond offers its impressive castle, a winding riverside trail and a bustling market square ideal for browsing or lingering over lunch. Leyburn brings independent shops, broad views and the gentle charm of a traditional Yorkshire market town, giving you plenty of ways to enjoy a slower pace. Tarn House provides a well-placed, characterful base for friends and families seeking to make the most of Hawes and the wider Yorkshire Dales.

Hawes is a popular market town in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire and is regarded as one of the honeypot tourist attractions of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Standing between Buttertubs and Fleet Moss, the town is an excellent centre for walking and touring Wensleydale and the adjoining dales of Swaledale, Cotterdale, Dentdale, Garsdale, Wharfedale and Chapel-le-Dale. Take a walk around the Hawes Town Trail, Millennium Walk, Pennine Way or along the River Ure, which is nearby. In 1998 Hawes was awarded the English Tourist Board Silver Award for the "Best Day Trip Out". Modern traffic has long replaced coaches and horse drawn wagons along its narrow streets, but market day (Tuesdays) in Hawes is as busy as ever, with a farmers’ auction attracting sheep farmers from all over the north of England. Traditional shops, cafés and inns now cater for a variety of Dales visitors as well as the local community. The award-winning Wensleydale Creamery, made famous by the animated Wallace and Gromit films, is now open to visitors so that they can see the famous cheese being made and sample the end product in a welcoming café. In the old station yard you will find the busy National Park Centre and Dales Countryside Museum. The Museum is home to the magnificent collection of Dales artefacts by the two great Dales historians and writers, Marie Hartley and Joan Ingilby.
