There are beautiful views of the river, Larpool viaduct and an occasional passing steam train from this charming holiday cottage, well-equipped for self-catering and popular with couples and small families. Guests love the peaceful location 20-30 minutes walk from the centre of historic Whitby with excellent access to footpaths and cycling routes.

Whitby is a lively fishing town on the North York Moors coast with plenty to offer in all seasons. It's best known for its ruined abbey. The Gothic romance inspired Bram Stoker as a setting for his famous novel Dracula. Follow in the author's footsteps on a self-guided tour starting at the Old Lighthouse on the West Pier, where you can also test your skills on the 9-hole Arnold Palmer Putting Course. The harbour is busy with fishing boats and sightseeing and whale watching tours into the bay. Other things in Whitby include visiting the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, souvenir shopping for Whitby jet or glass, and participating in one of the town's many popular events that include weekends celebrating Goth culture and 1960s music. Satisfy your hunger with traditionally smoked kippers and slake your thirst with a refreshing drink made with gin from the Whitby Distillery.

There's nowhere better to stay for exploring both the coast and the moors. Walking is an excellent way to enjoy the scenery. Follow the 3.5-mile route along the beach to Sandsend or the circular route from the lighthouse and around the bay to the abbey. Take the train to Goathland station to walk to Beck Hole and the Mallyan Spout Waterfall, follow a stretch of the Cleveland Way at Ravenscar or walk through the May Beck woodland to Falling Foss waterfall. You can also book a seat on the North York Moors Railway to Pickering for sightseeing in the beautiful moors market town. River Bank Cottage is also ideal as a base for a cycling holiday with beautiful routes to suit all styles and abilities, including the traffic-free Scarborough Cindertrack and the trails in Dalby Forest.
