The Signal House in Whitby is highly praised for its excellent location, just a short walk from the town centre and with the added bonus of private parking. Guests appreciate the spacious, well-equipped accommodation, lovely views, and the unique experience of watching steam trains pass by. The property is generally described as clean, comfortable, and ideal for families and dog owners. While some minor maintenance and cleaning issues are occasionally mentioned, the overall experience is very positive, with many guests eager to return and recommend the cottage to others.
Most guests found the property clean and tidy, though a few noted issues such as dust, cobwebs, and occasional stains on carpets. These concerns were outweighed by the majority of positive comments regarding cleanliness.
The location is consistently praised as ideal, with easy access to Whitby town centre, scenic walks, and the novelty of nearby steam trains. The convenience of on-site parking is frequently highlighted.
Guests generally found the cottage comfortable, with spacious rooms and quality bedding. A few mentioned minor issues such as soft pillows or an uncomfortable bed, but these were rare and did not detract from the overall comfort.
The property is well-equipped, with a modern kitchen and ample seating. Some guests noted maintenance issues (e.g., door locks, shower pressure, patio weeds) and suggested the addition of a washing machine or larger fridge for larger groups.
Many guests appreciated thoughtful touches such as welcome packs with milk, biscuits, and coffee. Please note, however, that these gifts are not guaranteed for every stay.

It’s a leisurely five-minute level walk into the heart of the town, with the benefit of your own private parking space for up to two cars. Throughout the summer the steam locomotives pass by as they chug their way from the surrounding National Park into Whitby, billowing clouds of steam. They are a sight to behold and here you have front row seats! There is an enclosed patio facing the train tracks, where you can soak up the sun. Stepping inside you have the open plan living space with the living room as well as the dining area, with two leather sofas around the TV. The adjoining kitchen is well-equipped and ideal for creating all of your family’s favourite meals. You have the added convenience of a ground floor toilet. Up on the first floor, there is a single as well as a twin bedroom, both with views over the train tracks with the harbour beyond, here you can watch boats as they return from the sea. There is also a double bedroom as well as a family bathroom. Up on the top floor, you have the master kingsize bedroom with elevated views across the upper harbour as well as an en-suite shower. This is a great size for families as well as friends.
Explore your local surroundings, where you will find the popular chip shop and a convenience store all within a three minute walk. Continue into the heart of the town where you will find the attractions of the Gothic Whitby Abbey, Whitby Museum, the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, and panoramic views atop the 199 steps. There is something for everyone in Whitby, with excellent fishing opportunities available along the West Pier and aboard one of the many boat trips which leave the harbour, picturesque picnic spots within Pannett Park, or fun-filled live performances at the Whitby Pavilion. Don’t forget to spend the day on the glorious sands of Whitby Beach, where you can bathe, build sandcastles with the little ones, or wander up to the historic Whitby Harbour West Lighthouse. For adventurous guests, there is a local surf school, where you can also hire paddleboards and sea kayaks. There are boat trips from the harbour where you can look out for coastal wildlife, including seals and porpoises if you are lucky.
Venture into the North York Moors National Park, where you will discover charming villages, vast moorland as well as ancient forests all laced with walking trails. For some of the best scenery, you can take a day trip from Whitby on the steam train. If you love the great outdoors you can follow the Cinder Track on foot or by bike down to Scarborough via Robin Hoods Bay and Ravenscar or take in the incredible views along the Cleveland Way trail along the cliff tops. For families, you can explore the attractions of the Sea Life Centre, Alpamare water park, Go Ape tree top zip lining, and Flamingo Land Theme Park all within an hour’s drive away, perfect for a day out to remember. This was our second stay at the Signal House, and it didn't disappoint !!! Fantastic location so easily placed for access into Whitby town centre and all it has to offer. This visit it was nice to have more patio furniture than last time , so we could all sit out for breakfast in the sun and watch the steam train go past , the milk, biscuits and coffee pods are a nice touch too.Comfy beds , lovely clean towels and bed linen, if it's possible to have a complaint it would be the pillows , which were way too soft for us all !!! , but that's just personal taste!!!We will just have to bring our own next visit!!Five of us visited and all five would highly recommend!!!We will be back. Thank you.

Fabulous place to stay with my family and our dog. Local to the town and ofcourse, the train station. This was extremely handy for us as we arrived on public transport. After such a long journey with our 5 children, you can imagine our delight when we arrived, to see fresh milk in the fridge, coffee/ sugar/ tea and a fresh pack of biscuits on the side. Extremely clean with no odour or signs of any other dogs or family which may have stayed there before us. Perfect family holiday.
