Withnail's Hideaway is a quaint, centrally located cottage in Whitby, offering a cosy atmosphere close to shops, restaurants, and a dog-friendly beach. Its charm and convenience are appreciated by guests, though some mention steep stairs and limited natural light.
The property is generally described as clean, with one review specifically noting it as 'lovely and clean inside'. However, one review mentioned dusty windows and skirting boards, slightly lowering the score.
The location is highly praised for being central, close to amenities, and a minute away from the beach, making it an ideal spot for visitors looking to explore Whitby.
Comfort receives mixed reviews; guests find the living room cosy and the bed comfortable, but some report the bed size as smaller than expected and noise from neighbours as disruptive.
Facilities are basic but adequate for simple meals, with a warm shower and cosy living space. However, issues with weak showers, steep stairs, and maintenance problems like a broken lock and carbon monoxide alarm incident affect the score.
While guests would appreciate small welcoming touches like tea and biscuits, there are no consistent mentions of such gestures to accurately assess thoughtfulness. Therefore, this score is set to null.

Whitby is a glorious scenic town, drawing guests from around the world to admire its olde world charm, with the iconic abbey perched on the cliff tops above and the golden beach stretching for miles below. Withnail’s Hideaway is perfectly positioned in the heart of Whitby’s old town, where ancient fishermen’s cottages huddle together forming little gunnels and yards between them.
This is a traditional and authentic cottage, a little wonky in places which adds to its charm. Stepping inside on the ground floor you have the kitchen and dining area, where you can create your own meals if you fancy a cosy night in. Up on the first floor you have the living room, you really feel the cottages age in here, with the old wooden panelling and built in cupboards with the beams above you. Up on the top floor you have the snug bedroom, with a small double bed as well as an en-suite shower room. From here you have views amongst the rooftops with glimpses of the harbour.
Whitby is a seafaring town and proud of its heritage; there are tales of Viking invasions, heroic sea rescues as well as seafaring pioneers. Discover more at the museums, including one on a tall ship in the harbour. There are also festivals throughout the seasons including the bi-annual Goth weekends and the regatta, you can often find live music in the pubs or at the Spa Pavilion.
Further afield the surrounding North York Moors National Park is full of moorland and woodland trails. You can explore by car or hop on the heritage steam train, which leaves Whitby and travels over the moors towards the market town of Pickering, stopping at picturesque villages along the way. There is also an array of seaside towns and villages along the coast to visit, with breath-taking beaches and coves. To the south you have Robin Hoods Bay, Boggle Hole, Ravenscar and Scarborough, and to the north you have Sandsend, Runswick Bay, Staithes and Saltburn. Most pubs and cafés are dog friendly, there is even a dog bakery in the town! Beach ¾ mile. Pub and restaurant 50 yards.

Quirky old Cottage in a great location between Church Street and the harbour. However, being in a small historic alley, light levels are only good in top floor bedroom. We were fine with steep stairs but anyone with mobility issues would have a problem.

Great location.Very steep stairs so do bare in mind before booking. Overall the place is in a fabulous central location and not far from the dog friendly beach. The place was lovely and clean inside but the kitchen could have been more welcoming when you enter, it’s very dark as not much natural light and could do with a splash of colour- as it seemed rather drab. And, It’s first impressions that count… there was a bit of noise from the ‘flying freehold’ above but on the whole a value for money stay 💕

The cottage has a small footprint and is on three level. Kitchen.living room. Bedroom I am 65. So getting from floor to floor was frustrating at times. that aside we were in a central spot and had a great time. the harbour beach( dog friendly unlike the main beach was seconds away .four pubs on the doorstep. Quirky little bolt hole for a last minute short break. Would have liked milk, tea, and a biscuit it's always a nice touch and doesn't cost the earth.
