For the warmer days and evenings there is a patio area with charcoal BBQ enabling you to enjoy the Dark Skies above.
On a clear night the star-gazing, and feeling of remoteness, is truly breath-taking. The area offers excellent opportunities for walking, cycling, fishing and exploring our night skies from the doorstep along with all that this unspoilt area of Scotland has to offer.
The Galloway Forest Park forms part of the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere, and is a firm favourite of hill walkers and mountain bikers with internationally recognised biking trails amidst some of the most dramatic scenery in the south of Scotland. There is a wealth of wildlife, such as red and roe deer in the forest and hills, while wild goats thrive on the rocky outcrops. Opportunities abound to explore the waymarked trails, cycle routes and picnic areas by bike or on foot amidst the highest hills of South Scotland. Glentrool Visitor Centre is the gateway to the Galloway hills, where you can pick up maps and information on the hill ranges. The Merrick, South Scotland's highest peak at nearly 2,800ft can be climbed from Bruce's Stone, which can be found overlooking Loch Trool. This huge granite boulder commemorates Robert the Bruce’s first victory over the English in 1307 during the Scottish Wars of Independence.
Slightly further afield your will discover Scotland’s National Book Town, Wigtown, with its numerous independent bookshops and cafes. The Ayrshire Coast including Culzean Castle and Country Park and links to Scotland’s national Bard, Robert Burns are also within easy reach. All of which make for a good day out and are worthy of a visit.

We had the most amazing 5 days at Garlies lodge! We had a family gathering of 10 for my daughter’s 21st and my Mum’s 70th Birthdays. The hosts were very accommodating and communication was quick and helpful. The house itself was rustic and full of character and set in the most peaceful and a tranquil area in the Galloway Forest, lots of things close by with Bruce’s Stone, Murray’s Monument, Grey Mares Tail Waterfall, which the kids did some wild swimming under!! Cardoness Beach is 30 minutes away but is a must visit with a tiny church on the beach, lovely play area and great beach to spend time finding Unicorn Horn shells and Sea Glass. Amenities were 10 minute drive away if you needed anything but we ordered an Asda delivery for when we arrived, which was great. Lots of room for 10 people, dining table fitted us all, as well as the sofas in the lounge, it felt very inclusive too with the dining table being open plan to the sofas which meant some people were lounging whilst others were playing board games at the table, a good choice of which are provided. 3 showers, which were lovely, 2 baths, 1 of which was a very cool feature bath and 4 toilets so no one was really waiting to use the facilities. Beds were comfy, if you like pillows, they are perfectly fine but take an extra one with you, there were 2 per person but my Wife likes 5 to herself! Lots of wood and coal for the log burner and wood fired aga, along with the fire pit out side the Bothy. This was an amazing addition, with a pool table, dart board, amplifier speakers to connect to, and a built in BBQ and covered seating with the fire pit, we spent a lot of early evening time in there. A couple of points to note, with 10 people and a large amount of food, there is a small fridge in the kitchen and a fridge freezer in the utility room, we could have done with a bit more space to keep food, there is a small fridge in the Bothy but we filled this with drinks! The main oven/cooker again maybe a little small when catering for 10, the oven does take a bit of time to warm up, there was the aga but we decided not to try to use it. The path and steps up to the Bothy were a little narrow and the hand rail a little wobbly but this is easily sorted. All in all we had an amazing time at Garlies Lodge and made memories we will keep for a lifetime. We would definitely visit again and can highly recommend the Hosts to provide a house to enjoy a great holiday experience.

We had a lovely family weekend. The weather was a bit rubbish but managed a walk to Glentrool village and The Hive for a coffee. Thoroughly enjoyed the games room and plenty of space to relax
