The master king-size bedroom also features an en-suite shower room, providing a private space to freshen up. As you begin to settle, draw your attention to the carefully curated photography of the owner, and draw inspiration of the hidden gems and must-see spots in the area. Meander through the woodland of Galloway House Gardens, where plant lovers will revel in their exploratory stroll through acres of landscaped beauty, to access the beach for a day of basking in the sun. History enthusiasts will relish a visit to the ancient village of Whithorn, boasting the Iron Age Roundhouse, The Whithorn Trust and Museum, offering a guaranteed picture-postcard moment everywhere you turn.

Immerse yourself in the mystique and tranquillity of St Ninian's Cave, steeped in legend and religion as it reflects centuries of devotion; the peace within is palpable. Further afar is Galloway Forest Park, where you can hike through ancient woodlands, marvel at cascading waterfalls, and stargaze under some of the darkest skies in Europe. Ptarmigan awaits delightful exploration, whether you choose to stay in or around the village.

Garlieston is a small coastal village that nestles on the Machars Peninsula, looking out over Wigtown Bay. It was popular as a fishing and cargo harbour until the 20th century, partly due to the extension of the Wigtownshire Railway. Worth noting is the part played by Garlieston in the development and testing of the Mulberry harbours that were deployed during the D-Day Landings. Today, the harbour provides berthing for leisure and fishing craft and offers a shop and Post Office as well as a traditional inn serving wholesome meals. The gardens of nearby Galloway House date from 1740 and offer a superb network of walks through magical woodland that lead towards the sweeping shoreline. Just north of Garlieston is Wigtown, once a thriving port, and now Scotland’s National Book Town. Apart from the attractive scenery and the varied coastline, the Machars Peninsular offers pretty towns such as Port William, still a working harbour, and Monreith, which was the home of writer Gavin Maxwell and offers a delightful, sandy beach.

Hosts are very friendly and accommodating even offered us a late checkout as no one was coming in the same day. Perfect location and stay.

Warm and comfortable with amazing views over the harbour. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Ptarmigan and would highly recommend it.

The village of Garlieston is exceptionally beautiful, with lovely coastal paths and a cosy pub within five minutes walk of the cottage. The property has great views of the sea from both sides. We also got out to Whithorn and the Isle of Whithorn which are both worth a visit - and to Scotland's booktown Wigtown, full of second hand book shops and an excellent antique shop. Inside the cottage is immaculately fitted out, warm and stylish. There was a welcome bottle of wine awaiting us, as well as chocolates and all the store cupboard condiments you might need. Phil our host was super friendly, flexible about arrival and departure times, and instantly posted on a pair of shoes I had left behind. We can't wait to come again.
