Llandovery 4 miles. Gatekeepers Cottage is a royal cottage resting in the village of Myddfai near Llandovery, Carmarthenshire. Once King Charles's former Welsh estate, this abode boasts an enclosed garden and off‑road parking, making it a glorious base for two couples, families and friends seeking a charming base. Pulling into the small on-site car park, a gentle walk leads you towards the cottage, which sits quietly within a peaceful courtyard, framed by the rolling Carmarthenshire landscape and the enduring presence of the estate’s past, once owned by a relative of Anne Boleyn and overlooking an 18th-century country park edged by ancient woodland.
Stepping through the door, you enter a tiled hall where coats and bags can be set aside before freshening up in the cloakroom, allowing the outside world to fall away. From here, the bright sitting room opens up, where armchairs and a sofa rest upon a patterned rug that softens the space and invites you to unwind after time spent outdoors, with a calm, settled atmosphere that reflects the care found throughout the cottage, and perhaps a quiet sense of history lingering in the walls. Beyond, the tiled kitchen is fitted with wooden worktops that encourage relaxed, unhurried cooking, making it easy to prepare breakfast before setting out to explore the estate or to gather over supper at the dining table as evening settles across the courtyard.
Climbing the carpeted stairs, the landing leads to a bathroom where a rainfall shower offers a refreshing start to the day, while the bath invites you to slow the pace and linger a little longer. Further along, the first double bedroom provides a calm retreat, complete with an armchair and generous wardrobe space, while the second double offers a spacious and pleasing place to rest, both creating a soothing place to pause and recharge after a day exploring the estate. Stepping outside once more, the enclosed garden offers a quiet corner to sit with the gentle rhythm of the estate around you.
Beyond the courtyard, Llwynywermod begins to unfold: wildflower meadows, traditionally farmed fields and peaceful woodland trails stretch across the land, managed without pesticides and guided instead by nature’s own rhythms, allowing the landscape to thrive at its own pace. Guests are welcome to wander through the estate’s walled garden, where a conservatory and separate sun room provide sheltered spaces to pause and take it all in. For those seeking a deeper sense of renewal, wellness experiences such as yoga, reiki, foraging and guided walks are available, creating a gently holistic haven where rest, reflection and the landscape move in quiet harmony.
From the cottage, a shop and pub are also within easy reach, offering a gentle connection back to everyday life when you need it. Gatekeepers Cottage offers a rare chance to slow down and savour life on one of Wales’s most storied estates. Note: This can be booked with refs. 1181896, and 1181898, together sleeping 14 guests.
