Dog Friendly Cottages In Western Isles

The Western Isles, also known as the Outer Hebrides, are incredible, untouched islands off the west coast of the Scottish mainland. If you're looking for stunning surroundings and a relaxed pace of life, these Isles are a wonderful place to indulge in a cottage holiday.

With their golden sands and clear blue seas, you would be forgiven for mistaking this beautiful place for the Caribbean. With wide skies and unspoilt vistas, it will hard to resist the urge to explore. There are excellent opportunities to get active here from walking to surfing and cycling to kayaking. As you will be surrounded by the sea, it's unsurprising that you will find excellent fresh seafood here. Enjoy slowing down and breathing in the fresh air.

This is a beautiful property in a stunning location very central to explore the Islands and for provisions.

The property has a beautifully kept and secure garden which was perfect with a dog. I loved the sense of history and was lucky enough to meet the housekeeper who had lived on the croft as a child so she added to the information already in the cottage about its history which I found really interesting. The cottage was lovely and warm and as the weather was on one day pretty extreme that was a godsend. The Kitchen could be better equipped and there were some minor maintenance issues which I reported both to you and the housekeeper which hopefully will be addressed for future guests. In particular I would have liked to have had a couple more ovenproof dishes and at least one non stick pan. I find most holiday cottages do not provide the latter but I would find it useful as I do like to cook for myself and I ate out more than I planned because the kitchen was a bit basic. The information pack on the cottage and on activities in the area was very good. The only thing that wasn't clear was whether guests had access to the washing machine which was in the shed and as such I didn't use it. If it is part of the facilities would have been good to know. Aside from these issues I had a lovely time in the cottage and it was a comfortable and cosy place to return to after a day walking in rather unfriendly weather. I am sure had I been there earlier in the summer when the weather had been so settled I would probably have thought I was in heaven and not ventured beyond the glorious beach.

Struthan’s location is undeniably beautiful, with easy access to stunning beaches like Reef and Uig.

The bedding was high-quality and very comfortable, which we appreciated. However, the property has several areas that need improvement. The interior feels dark and lacks privacy, with the side window facing the owners' parking area and the front door opening directly onto the road. There is no fresh air really coming in as we had the side window open but no breeze and at times we had the front door open to allow fresh air but as we had our dog and the road is close we couldn’t have it open much for safety. Perhaps a window on the glass side panel in the door would help, Although the property initially appeared clean, a closer inspection revealed it could benefit from a thorough deep clean. The extractor fan in shower was dirty as well as the edge of the bottom of the shower. Empty diffuser left in bathroom. The selection of glassware was disappointing, with mismatched glasses that seemed to be leftovers from the owners’ kitchen. Additionally, the noise from the owners’ living area above was quite intrusive; we could hear footsteps and even snoring, which further detracted from our sense of privacy. The welcome booklet was lacking, with minimal local recommendations and several empty sleeves where information should have been. A small welcome basket would have been a nice touch to make us feel more at home. Overall, our stay was okay, but addressing these small issues could significantly enhance the guest experience.

The directions to the property were absolutely spot on, we had no problems finding it at all.

The location couldn't be better, easy to get to all the main tourist places and beaches. The annexe is attached to the owners house and we met both of them during our stay. Both are lovely friendly people who were happy to chat but were also unobtrusive whilst we were in the studio. I needed to ask for help working out the heating system and after a power cut, Phill answered my texts within half an hour despite being at work himself. The studio apartment is basic but is beautifully furnished with added touches such as Harris tweed cushions and curtains. The bed was comfortable with fresh bedding and the bath towels were soft and thick. Essentials that may have been forgotten were also provided. The room was warm and a pleasure to be in. All kitchen utensils, pans, crockery, glasses etc were available, we didn't come across anything 'missing'. The owner has left a suggestion booklet and looking back through it, everything previous guests have mentioned has been addressed. We enjoyed meeting the family's animals especially the chickens who often looked through the door panels at us. The door opens onto a gravelled driveway which is beside the road but there was little traffic so it was never an issue. The parking area for guests is just beyond the driveway. We had an enjoyable week on Lewis and will definitely be back at Struthan in the future.

Beachcombers is located in an open and quiet position not far from the Eriskay causeway.

I saw and photographed Red deer and Eriskay ponies from the comfort of the living room. It is within walking distance of the Kilbride Cafe and Polochar Pub/restaurant on South Uist (2-3 miles) and the Am Polotician pub/restaurant on Eriskay (a couple of miles). There is a shop on Eriskay near the pub for provisions and a suitably sized Co-op about 6 miles or so away. We were lucky as the weather was sunny all the time we were there (the locals state that is not always the case). The Eriskay to Barra ferry is 5 mins drive away, and Lochboisdale and its ferry port about 10 miles away. All in all the location and view from Beachcombers was perfect for us and the property suitably sized should the weather have let us down. There are lots and lots of virtually deserted white sandy beaches on South Uist and Eriskay. The roads are in good condition (compared to ours at home) and are mostly single lane with passing points, the locals seem to adapt their speed so you pass each other whilst still travelling. Generally the roads are quiet as the islands are bigger than you think, with small populations that are on South Uist very spread out. The neighbours said the boat trip to see the bird life was amazing. We had great expectations of Beachcombers and we were not disappointed.

Fantastic cottage with amazing views over to Eriskay and the adjacent islands.

We loved just sitting in the lounge looking out of the picture windows at the views that were constantly changing with the different lighting and saw short eared owls and golden eagles flying nearby as well as being visited by the local wild white horses. We stayed as two couples and all agreed that both the cottage and the views were the best we’d ever stayed in. The cottage is well laid out, very comfortable and well equipped and is just as good if not better than the photos on the website. Easy access to the Politician pub over In Eriskay, along with the well stocked local shop there and the nearby co-op in Daliburgh. Breakfasts at the Kilbride cafe were also great and lots of lovely walks and beaches close by made for an excellent holiday.
