What our customers say about their holidays
Kate - Verified booking
We had a very relaxing time.
The flat was very clean, beautifully decorated with lovely paintings and was very comfortable with every amenity provided for. The bed was large and extremely luxurious, so much so that we struggled getting out of it in the morning. The towels smelt lovely, please let us know what you use to wash them. The welcome gift pack together with the wine and the fresh flowers, especially the single rose on the bed were extra nice touches. Although we couldnât park directly outside the property, there were safe parking areas free at the side of the road near the race course. Cartmel is a quaint village which you can walk around easily with a good small supermarket and other shops / coffee shops to buy refreshments and souvenirs. There are 4 pubs, one being directly across the road from Tower House however we didnât experience any noise from there. We thoroughly recommend the Unsworth Brewery where you can have cocktails and craft ale and has an outside drinking space with heaters. There is also a restaurant, Oscars. We appreciate the building is grade 2 listed and sometimes there can faults with it which are hard to rectify. The shower flow was powerful however the drainage was slower to drain away and therefore had to keep turning the shower off mid way to let it drain. The basin hot tap shuddered and made a loud noise as if it had an air lock. However these minor details did not detract from the brilliant stay that we had at 1 Tower House. We would thoroughly recommend it and would have no hesitation in returning. Thank you for making our holiday special.

This property is in a great location within easy walking distance of the racecourse and Priory and the town square with a vast selection of dog friendly pubs and restaurants, cafes and shops to suit every taste and budget.
The interior of the property is tastefully decorated. The good sized living room and bedroom have a cozy, warm feeling to them and provide a home from home. We appreciated the many extra touches provided to add to the comfort of our stay. Thanks for the lovely bottle of wine and basic provisions to get us started. The owner answered our questions honestly when booking so we were prepared to deal with the fact that there was no garden or parking and the tiny shower room, off the galley kitchen. Slippers are needed but the shower worked well and the wide windowsill provided ample space to put bags containing our bathroom stuff which was easily reachable from the shower. Small bathrooms can be easier to negotiate and that proved to be the case here, albeit one at a time. These things did not detract from our stay, either for ourselves or our two Labradors who loved their holiday with regular walks around the racecourse , albeit sometimes in the early hours of the morning, (an extra evening walk after dinner solved that difficulty) and a choice of lovely dog friendly beaches and stately homes with extensive grounds to visit within easy reach. Overall this apartment provided excellent value for money and the residents parking permit provided for use during our stay proved invaluable.

I would like to say how disappointed we both are.
What was meant to be a little weekend break, combined with a special family celebration nearby turned out to be a massive let-down. Upon arrival at the cottage we found a dehumidifier and a piece of paper with instructions, as well as a few mini dehumidifier boxes in the bedroom, please see pictures attached. Being asthmatic made it worse. Had I been aware of these damp issues, combined with a strong moldy damp smell, I would have not booked this cottage. We looked for alternatives but there was nothing to suit our needs as in no pet friendly local alternatives available at such short notice. Having made bookings with Sykes Cottages previously it is even more disappointing that this property slipped through the net and does not meet the usual high standards. It is fair to say though that apart from the damp issues, otherwise the cottage is really nice, with quality towels and bedding provided, a very cosy living room and a well equipped kitchen. The power of the electric shower is not great, however, it still works well enough. With the owners living above the property, you can hear them walking around but that is not a big problem. We bought some air freshers for the bedroom and used the dehumidifier as advised but still, it really spoilt our stay.

Nice central location for exploring the Lake District.
Parking the car and getting off the drive again is a nightmare, puts you off going again. Was very noisy in the accompanying flat, we were glad that the lady moved out on the Wednesday but loads of noise till late at night from the removal men also, spoilt the evening, although a lady from Skyeâs had called to warn us beforehand. Nice bedroom, but no plug sockets any where near the mirror so I had to buy an extension lead so my wife could plug her hairdryer in. Bed not very comfortable, itâs like sleeping on a slope. Also to appeal to families there could be a sofa bed in the lounge. Kitchen facilities good, strange choice of crockery and cutlery though. Washing machine you need a degree in nuclear science to be able to use it, we eventually sussed out the microwave and cooker bit our washing got stuck in the machine for three days before we could figure out how to open the door! Would be brilliant for an elderly couple as bus stops are very close by, and they could use the free OAP bus passes to explore the Lakes. Car parking charges around the Lake District are extortionate and it costs 40p to use the toilets in many towns!

The annexe was fine for what we wanted, somewhere to crash after long hard days in the mountains.
It was all immaculately clean on arrival. The bed was super comfortable and the shower good and hot. There was a problem with the toilet as it took 30 minutes for the cistern to fill, so we had to both go, then flush. The kitchen facilities were fine for us as we'd chosen very easy meals rather than cooking up a storm. I could envisage problems should you want more than 2 saucepans on the go and a casserole or similar in the oven all at the same time, as there was not much available in that respect. There was a lot of furniture scraping noise from upstairs at times and you could hear them moving around, it didn't bother us, but if you want complete silence you won't get it. The property looks a little tired, quite a bit of damp on the walls in the kitchen and peeling paint in places. We could not hear the main road from the annex which was good, it is set back from the road a good way. The gentleman upstairs did come to check we were warm enough which was very thoughtful.
