What our customers say about their holidays

  • Andy - Verified booking

I would not want to stay here in the winter.

Rodent sized holes under the door from the dining area to the garden look very inviting for a cold four legged critter or in fact any other critters out there. Furniture in the lounge is very stained and we were pleased we could sit in the garden due to the weather. However, the garden lights are in fact nowhere near the garden seating area so a little useless as it gets darker. The knives and forks look like they were there when the place was built and that is not a compliment as to their vintage look. Rugs, both upstairs and downstairs, are threadbare and fraying at the edges. Some of the windows are broken and the garden was quite overgrown during our stay. The key safe is in fact nowhere near the front door and so when arriving in the dark it was a challenge to find the door keys tucked around the corner nowhere near the door !! In the upstairs bathroom the sink was falling off the vanity shelf so be careful when washing in it or cleaning your teeth for fear of it parting company with the shelf, and the glass tiles are all lifting off the surface too. The bin in the bathroom also doesn’t close and needs to be replaced but was still there so contents are all on display. The pots hanging in the kitchen needed to be cleaned prior to use. In the main bedroom one wall was plastered but not painted. In the downstairs bedroom en-suite there was mold in the bathroom which has clearly not been cleaned sufficiently and the walls are showing signs of damp in the main bedroom upstairs and in the downstairs bedroom. This property is advertised as being dog friendly but there is in fact nowhere convenient for dogs to sleep as there is no door on the kitchen area and so dogs, unless kept in a bedroom with you are, free to roam around the house, which is far from ideal. Also, it seems the place must be totally cleaned tip to toe on departure which is not ideal when kicking out time is 10 am..... plus I would highly recommend taking your own towels as we have been charged for a towel with a bit of mud on it and a towel with some water based makeup on it.... having used them obviously... derrr... you would think you could !! The issue with the towels is the fact that the decision to charge for them was taken before they had been put in to a washing machine. Unless of course the linen and towels are not normally washed between guests ? This was all done without any discussion on the matter, despite us asking for better information and whether the towels had actually ventured anywhere near a washing machine or not, however the funds were simply taken from our account with zero discussion on the matter... It is also ironic that on arrival, the tea towels that were in the kitchen were absolutely filthy and we put them to one side but there was no mention of the tea towels in the “damaged towels” claim and it was a good job we took our own tea towels as directed. We would not stay at this place again and we would not use Sykes cottages again either. Their handling of the matter was to simply brush it under one of the threadbare and frayed carpets...

Our stay at the High Ridge in Milton Under Wychwood was lovely.

The cottage was ideal, it felt homely as soon as you walked in. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. The attic room bedroom/en-suite looked to have recently been refurbished - it was gorgeous! There was a good range of facilities, especially the kitchen. The guest information folder was excellent. The location was perfect, ideally positioned for quick and easy access to all the most popular places to visit. The local amenities (shop, cafe, pub) were also excellent. Sorry to say there were a few minor issues with the cottage housekeeping/maintenance. We put the central heating on one evening and found that the towel radiator in the upstairs bathroom leaked from the valve. We closed the valve as much possible but it still leaked and would fill a small bowl over 24hrs. I see there has been mention of the leaking radiator valve in previous reviews. Also the glass corner shelf in the shower needed attention, it was lose and looked quite precarious/dangerous. The outside double sockets did not work - only wanted to use it to run a cable to charge the electric car to save running the cable through an open window or door. The kitchen cupboard doors under the sink needed attention - both hinges were lose so the doors had dropped and two of the ceiling lights in the kitchen did not work but it wasn’t the bulbs. In the garden one morning there was a strong smell of drains and noticed there was ‘grey’ water under the decking - it dissipated after a day or two. We intended to run the hoover round on our last day but neither of the hoovers seemed to work properly. Most of these issues were reported by email on the 20/9 We had a response but no one came out while we were there. There are relatively minor things we wanted to bring to your attention to. It did not affected our stay at all. Thank you

We absolutely loved our stay at Lynton Cottage.

However, we were disappointed by a number of things. There was no hot water in the master bathroom and although the owner told us how to rectify the issue, there was no running water in the master bathroom in order to fix it. This meant we were unable to use the master bathroom at all during our stay and there was no hot water to the bath to bathe two young children who do not like showers. This appeared to be an ongoing issue which the owner needs to rectify. The wifi did not work during our stay either despite trying to reset it and turn it off a number of times. The owner expected me to reach out to the wifi provider to rectify the issue which I didn’t think was very fair. I had no mobile internet at the property to do this anyway. This made it hard for us to entertain the two young children at times. Another issue was that the BBQ was left dirty by previous guests so we did not use it. I also picked out dirty cups and dishes when I went to use them which I feel should be checked before every guest stay. Nevertheless, the property was absolutely beautiful in itself, especially the courtyard, which did make up for some of these issues. It is set in the most idyllic village which was perfect for country walks and we were able to enjoy the pub just a few steps away from the house. The house was perfect for our family stay and made our Mum’s 60th very special. I am sure myself and my family would stay at the cottage again so long as these issues are rectified!

    Positives: 1.

The cottage is in a perfect location to explore the beautiful Cotswolds. 2. It is well decorated, was comfortable and had plenty of room for the 6 of us. 3. Music system was great - we really enjoyed sitting in the kitchen/dining area. Negatives: 1. Cleanliness was an issue. We discovered dirty baking trays in the dishwasher when we arrived, dirty pans in the cupboards and in one bedroom, the carpet in the fitted cupboard was filthy. We even found an old sock from a previous guest! Not great! 2. Some bedrooms don't have full length mirrors, which we found frustrating. 3. The garden could have done with a tidy and the lawn needed mowing. It didn't feel very inviting, particularly after spotting a huge rat by the bins! 4. Finally, we had an issue with the hot water on the second night. Whilst myself and a friend were having separate showers, the water suddenly turned ice cold for both of us mid shower. After a call to Sykes and the maintenance guy then giving us a call, it did eventually get sorted but took about an hour and we had to contact The Hare restaurant to say that we would be late for our reservation. We tried not to let it spoil our evening but we would expect a house catering for a lot of people to have adequate facilities, especially considering the cost we paid per night for the cottage.

  • Gilbert - Verified booking

Overall, our stay at the house was enjoyable, with a few minor inconveniences.

The location was excellent, just minutes away from Sainsbury's supermarket and restaurants, making it convenient for our daily needs. The well-stocked kitchen was a highlight, and the thoughtful welcome gift of biscuits and milk added a nice touch to our arrival. However, there were some issues that detracted from our experience. Firstly, the incorrect Wifi network name in the manual caused initial confusion. Additionally, parking instructions need improvement. Although there are only four parking spaces opposite the house, we found that the free car park nearby only allowed parking for 12 hours per day, which was inconvenient for overnight parking. Fortunately, we discovered that Dunstan Avenue allowed unrestricted parking, and we utilized the available space there. Inside the house, we encountered a few inconveniences. The iron was difficult to locate and stored separately from the ironing board, which was unexpected. The creaking floorboards, particularly on the top floor, created a noisy environment for those below. The small kitchen and uncomfortable wooden chairs were less than ideal for extended periods of use. Additionally, the low ceilings and narrow, steep staircase posed hazards, and we found ourselves hitting our heads and tripping on small steps multiple times.
