Old Hall Cottage No 1 is a charming and well-equipped cottage in a peaceful village setting, praised for its cleanliness, relaxing atmosphere, and excellent hot tub. Guests appreciate the friendly and helpful owner, as well as thoughtful touches on arrival. The cottage is ideally located for exploring the surrounding area and offers good amenities for both couples and families. While some found the lounge and sofas less comfortable and the garden more of a yard, the overall experience is highly positive, with many guests keen to return.
Multiple reviews highlight the cottage as spotlessly clean and well maintained, with no significant complaints about cleanliness.
Guests enjoy the peaceful village location, proximity to local attractions like Beamish and Durham, and lovely walks nearby. The lack of a village shop is noted but not seen as a major drawback.
The cottage is described as cosy and relaxing, with comfy beds in most reviews. However, several guests mention the lounge and sofas are not ideal for lounging, and one guest found the mattress uncomfortable.
The cottage is well equipped, with a hot tub, wood burner, and kitchen facilities frequently praised. Minor issues include the size of the TV and the garden being more of a yard, but these do not detract significantly from the overall experience.
Guests mention thoughtful touches such as prosecco, beer, and biscuits on arrival, as well as excellent communication and responsiveness from the owner. Please note that these gifts are not guaranteed for every stay.

We stayed at Old Hall Cottage No.1 for a week for my partner's 60th birthday and firstly can I say that Esther and her team had decorated the property amazingly! There was also beer and prosecco waiting in the fridge, along with biscuits, tea, coffee and milk. Other items supplied which covered us for the entire week were toilet rolls, kitchen roll, firelighters and wood, (which is usually only the first burn for the fire). On the website photos of the cottage we could see a small BBQ and so took items to BBQ on the Saturday night, unfortunately, there was no BBQ. I contacted Esther and a brand new BBQ, with plentiful coals and fire lighters was waiting for us on our return from a day out on Saturday. Communication throughout the stay was excellent and nothing was too much trouble for Esther or her team. The kitchen was well equipped and included everything you required to cook a main meal.Having a downstairs bathroom was useful when using the hot tub. There was a plentiful supply of wood, sticks and firelighters for the woodburning stove at no extra charge. The hot tub was amazing, (private and fully covered), and the enclosed garden meant we did not have to worry about our dogs escaping whilst we enjoyed the tub. Both bedrooms were large, with very comfy beds and plenty of wardrobe space and the ensuite was small but perfectly formed. The lounge was cosy and the wood burning stove was a bonus, the only slight issue was the size of the TV, (32"), and the settees which were not the comfiest we have sat on. However, neither of these issues have stopped us for booking again for a break over New Year. There is no shop in the village, but Spennymoor is only a short drive away, so that is not a problem.

Lush little cottage in a peaceful location. Quiet village with only a small club and a bar restaurant at the Thomas Wright house. Food was lovely, and the portions were enormous. Staff couldn't have been nicer x. Comfy well equipped and maintained cottage with a hot tub which we loved. Would definitely recommend if you wanted a quiet few days away. Will definitely go back.
