Barn Owl Cottage is a spacious, cosy barn conversion set on a working farm near Matlock, offering guests a peaceful rural retreat with easy access to local attractions, walks, and villages. Guests consistently praise the welcoming atmosphere, well-equipped kitchen, and the unique experience of being close to farm animals. The property is especially appreciated by families and pet owners. While most reviews highlight cleanliness and comfort, a few mention occasional lapses in cleaning and some minor maintenance issues. Overall, the cottage provides an inviting and memorable base for exploring Derbyshire.
Most guests found the cottage clean and well-presented, with several specifically mentioning cleanliness. However, a small number of reviews noted cobwebs, missed cleaning between guests, and some external areas needing attention. These were exceptions rather than the norm.
The location is highly praised for its proximity to Cromford, Matlock Bath, and local walks, as well as the tranquil farm setting. Some guests noted the steep drive and limited accessibility for those with mobility issues, but overall, the setting is considered a major highlight.
Guests frequently describe the cottage as cosy, warm, and comfortable, with spacious rooms and comfy beds. A few mentioned less comfortable mattresses, but this did not detract significantly from their overall experience.
The cottage is well-equipped for self-catering, with a modern kitchen, dishwasher, and wet room. Outdoor space and parking are appreciated. Some minor maintenance issues (e.g., door lock, lack of grab rails) were mentioned, but facilities generally meet or exceed expectations.
Many guests appreciated thoughtful touches such as a welcome bottle of wine and cleaning packs. However, as these gifts are not guaranteed for every stay, guests should not expect them as standard.
