Shire Cottage in Matlock is praised for its historic charm, cosy warmth, and beautiful countryside setting. Guests enjoy the well-equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, and the enclosed dog field. The location is ideal for local explorations and scenic walks. Wildlife sightings, especially badgers, add to the experience. Some minor maintenance issues are noted, but overall, guests are eager to return.
The cottage consistently receives compliments for its cleanliness, with guests describing it as 'very clean'. However, one review suggests it's starting to show signs of wear, slightly impacting the score.
The location is highly praised for its proximity to countryside walks, local wildlife, and nearby attractions. The presence of a canal and the ease of access to local towns and scenic walks contribute to a high score.
Guests find the cottage comfortable, mentioning 'comfy beds' and a 'cosy' atmosphere. However, thin walls and noise from neighbours have been a slight concern for some, affecting the score marginally.
While the kitchen and other amenities are generally appreciated, there are mentions of the need for upgrades, including new windows, doors, and a better oven. The presence of multiple plug adapters was also a concern.
The host's thoughtfulness is evident through the provision of tea, coffee, milk, and cookies. However, as these gifts may vary and are not guaranteed for every stay, this is reflected in the score.
Enjoy both lake and river fishing on-site at this property. Wildlife enthusiasts can spot birds in the nearby nature reserve. Badgers visit the farmyard every evening included a rare, white individual..

The cottage is historic and quirky and very comfortable. Our weekend away was at the end of November and the cottage was warm and cosy. The farm is set in gorgeous countryside with a river and a canal close by. The kitchen is great for making food and has everything you might need.

What a cute little cottage this is.Beds all nice and comfy. Brilliant location for us to visit all the local sites. Lovely walks along the nearby canal. The cottage was well equipped, lovely and warm and very clean. There's a enclosed dog feild on site that you can book. The owner Mr Slaney is lovely. He leaves you to it but he's there if you need anything or just a chat in passing. Plenty of parking near the cottage to unload and then just a little walk through to the car park. We will definitely be returning the near future.
