Guests say

Castle Howe is a well-equipped, cosy cottage in the peaceful hamlet of Rosthwaite, perfect for walkers and families. Guests appreciate its ideal location for exploring the Lakes, with stunning views and easy access to local walks. The property offers a homely atmosphere with a well-stocked kitchen, bird feeders, and a selection of board games, making it a lovely getaway from the hustle and bustle.

Most guests found the cottage to be comfortable and cosy, though there were some concerns about cleanliness, particularly in the kitchen and with some cobwebs. The bathrooms and porch area were noted to be clean.

The location is highly praised for its beauty and convenience for walking, with guests loving the peacefulness and proximity to nature. The village is described as lovely and the views of Borrowdale as stunning.

The cottage is generally seen as cosy and comfortable. However, multiple reviews mention an uncomfortable king-size mattress, suggesting a need for replacement, which affects the comfort score.

Facilities are well-regarded, with a well-equipped kitchen and hot showers. However, there were issues with underfloor heating and a gas fire, which impacted the overall experience.

While guests enjoyed the bird feeders and board games, there is no mention of gifts, so it is not possible to assess thoughtfulness in terms of gifts. Therefore, this score is set to null.

This was our second time staying at Castle Howe, the first being a very memorable positive experience. The surrounding area is absolutely gorgeous with numerous walks for all abilities. The cottage is ideally suited to anyone wanting to get away from it all in the quiet hamlet of Rosthwaite. Unfortunately, this time around the cottage did not live up to our expectations. It wasn’t as clean as we would’ve liked, kitchen surfaces needed wiping, grubby around the sink and taps, cobwebs and debris on the floor. Although the bathrooms and porch area were clean. Our main gripe was with the king size mattress in the main bedroom. On our initial laying on it, we found a large divot along the whole centre of the Mattress exposing springs and was therefore extremely uncomfortable to lie on. We twisted and turned the mattress which helped to eliminate some of these problems, but it was still very uncomfortable. After reading previous reviews from last December and this March who also commented on the uncomfortable Mattress we found it alarming that the owner had chosen to ignore these and had not replaced it as it so desperately needs. I don’t think it’s much to expect a comfortable bed especially when paying the premium Castle Howe charge for a weeks vacation. These issues were reported at the beginning of our stay, 10 days ago and as yet we have not heard from the owner.

We loved it. Cosy, comfortable, really high quality cottage. Everything worked. We loved the layout, perfect for our family of three. The village is lovely and in the perfect place for some decent walks - uphill or flat along the river. We loved it so much we may well return in future!
