Overlooking the River Wear, these superb conversions of the barn, old byre and stables provide a wonderful holiday retreat. Surrounded by unspoilt countryside and is set in a haven of peace and tranquillity. Adjoining one another, they lie within an attractive courtyard setting, complemented by a fountain and shrubberies. All the properties have been tastefully refurbished and are full of character and charm, with shared use of lovely grounds, children’s play area, summer house and games room. The pretty village of Frosterley has shops and pubs, with walks in every direction along Weardale. Described as England’s ’last wilderness’, and possibly one of the best kept secrets, the Durham Dales are situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, made up of a wonderful blend of rugged upland, impressive waterfalls, fertile river valleys and wild flower meadows. Pleasant towns and pretty villages dot the area – the historic market town of Barnard Castle lies within easy reach, and boasts castle remains overlooking the town, as well as the Bowes Museum. Built as an impressive French-style chateau, the museum houses a magnificent collection of fine and decorative art. Other places of interest are Raby Castle, the ruins of Egglestone Abbey and Rokeby Hall. Hexham (with stately abbey) is a good day trip out, as well as the splendid cathedral city of Durham, 15 miles. NB: Refs 24969, 24970, 24971 and 23712 (also on the same site) can be booked together to accommodate up to 27 guests.

We had a lovely week in Frosterley The cottage was in a lovely setting with plenty of walks locally for our energetic collieThe cottage itself was a bit dark but nothing the light switch didnt fix Beds a bit hard for us but clean and tidy. The window openers could do with grease on them and the curtains and blinds let in quite a bit of light at night from street lights and outdoor light from adjoining property Kitchen well equipped but could have done with a larger frying pan Tv has free view no Netflix or Disney that we could seeOwner was welcoming and was on hand if needed but didnt intrude. Granddaughter loved the fish and the play area and the 10 min walk to the local shop was ideal first thing in the morning Plenty of parking. We had 3 cars as did next door and parking was never an issue Cottage has own designated bbq and outdoor chairs

Lovely place to stay, we visited lots in the local area. The owner is friendly and helpful, and there are lots of parking. The cottage was super clean and well appointed. The washing machine was great. The extra equipment such as he pool table, trampoline and swings were a lovely surprise.It is a great cottage, would fully recommend.

Absolutely stunning location and The Byre was the perfect place to stay. Great cottage with everything that we needed include a lovely welcome. I’d definitely return here to carry on my exploring of the area.
