Salmon Cottage is generally praised for its high-quality amenities, prime location for exploring local attractions, and cleanliness. While most guests enjoyed their stay, noting the well-equipped kitchen and comfortable bedrooms, some expressed concerns over comfort and maintenance issues such as dampness and a lack of instructions for appliances.
Most reviews highlight the property as spotlessly clean and well-maintained, but one review mentions a persistent damp smell and suggests a need for a deep clean, which slightly lowers the score.
The location is highly regarded for its proximity to local shops, pubs, and attractions, making it an excellent base for exploring Northumberland and the Scottish Borders.
Guests find the beds and bedding comfortable, but some noted that the sofas could be comfier and there were issues with dampness in the bedding, which affects the comfort score.
The property is well-equipped with new appliances and offers good WiFi and TV services, but some guests struggled with a lack of instructions and maintenance issues like a leaking shower seal, which impacts the score.
There is no mention of gifts or special touches that would indicate thoughtfulness from the host, so this category cannot be scored.

2 girls and 2 dogs. We had received 4 emails from Sykes instructing us (in no uncertain terms and not very welcoming) , what time we could arrive and what time we must vacate the property. And donât even think about asking for an early arrival. Really! All we wanted was a couple of nights away with a glass in hand, filled with wine and champagne . Itâs not a lot to ask. We do not fish, we do not fell walk, itâs simple requirements. Nice cozy cottage, me, my friend and her 2 dogs ( better behaved than small children) . Our trusty sat nav took us to the door, what a beautiful village. Key code applied and we are in, and an all pervading smell of damp! Oh dear, we thought. Never mind. Open all the windows and the doors and it will be fine. Wrong, the damp smell did not go away and on a closer inspection, the beds were damp. Properly damp! The best way forward was to strip the beds to air them off. We then saw that the mattress in the main bedroom was too large for the base and there were substantial hollows in the mattress. (We have pics) Having said that , we could not help but notice that the quality of bed linen was very good, however, this in no way could detract the poor quality of mattresses or the damp. We draped the bedding around the lounge and dining table but as there was no instructions for the electric radiators. It took us a while to turn them on. Once we thought the sheets were aired and dry, we turned the radiators off. Boldly going on, and determined to make the best of our 2 days away , we decamped to the lounge to watch the Olympics with snacks and wine. It took us a few minutes to decide who would recline on each sofa but, we could clearly see the indentations where the last guests had actually sat. Really! No one turns cushions? The arms of the sofas and the 2 throws covering them definitely need cleaning. We had decided to take our own evening meal with us for the first night. It was at this point at close inspection of the kitchen there were no instructions at all whatsoever for the oven, induction hob and dishwasher. Unfortunately we were so preoccupied with the damp beds and bedding that we gave no thought to kitchen and cooking facilities. Basic human life support (according to the World Health Organisation) - water - salt and bread.Turned the tap on, total success. After that what a disappointment! No welcome pack! A few tea bags, a few inches of coffee (we took our own coffee machine and coffee) and rock solid sugar. Left there for however long. On opening the fridge and indeed the freezer. Absolutely nothing. Hopefully the next clients will enjoy the bag of ice we left for our Gin and Malibu. Having overcome all these problems and in our naïveté we totally did expect there to be salt and pepper. WRONG!! Lovely little village so ran to the nearest pub who lent us salt and pepper for the duration of our stay. We returned salt and pepper as we left. Having had a shower, I was extremely distressed to find the whole floor was covered in water due to what I assume is a leaking seal. The bath mat was moved to collect the residue. Moving into rented accommodation basic personal requirements is surely to be able to hang up the jacket you arrive in. Salmon Cottage apparently not, no wardrobes, no hangers in either bedroom or hallway. Nothing but coat hooks in the porch. We are so glad that we were not at the village for a function. According to the listing the property is dog friendly with a courtyard. The courtyard turns out to be a claustrophobic space small enough to kill a cat because if you swing it you will kill it. It is a white washed 6 foot square space with no roof. It has a gutter drain and some fairy lights and a small blue table and 2 chairs! Scary! In general terms the cottage needs a deep clean, rugs, furniture and all. In conclusion we would like to state the enormous amount of traffic that went through this beautiful village. Trucks trundled past the best part of 18 hours a day. Not conducive to a quiet 2 days away. It clearly states there is a butchers , a bakers, a convenience store in the village. The added bonus we saw was a Gun Shop! Sadly for us no one mentioned these shops were not open on a Sunday or a Monday. The Gun shop was though! Scary! On a personal note my friend and I will always try to grab a couple of days away to recharge our batteries. On this past experience, I will not be looking at Sykes. We do not want our money back Kind regards Jill and Linda

A short drive to many interesting places to visit. It was very clean and well maintained. Everything was provided in the kitchen to allow for preparation of snacks and meals. Only minor downside was the tv, as it had no aerial connected, this meant we were forced to watch internet services which proved a challenge using the tv software available. Overall a very enjoyable stay.
