Grattan Cottage (ref UK11036) and Manor Cottage (ref UK11037) are set within the extensive grounds of the historic and Grade II-listed Grattan Manor, just outside the village of Bow. A freshwater spring within the grounds is the apparent exact centre of Devon. Both cottages are furnished and equipped to a very good standard and each has its unique character and charm. Wood burners, well-equipped kitchens and private patio areas all contribute to the appeal of the cottages.
Both Grattan Cottage, which is detached, and Manor Cottage, a wing of a property, overlook the old orchard, a large lawned area with some of the remaining fruit trees. It’s ideal for sitting out on a warm summer’s day or taking the dog for an early morning stretch. Within the orchard, each cottage has a private sitting-out area; Grattan Cottage has a raised gazebo and the use of a barbecue hut in the orchard. Croquet is occasionally available by prior arrangement with the Lord of the Manor, i.e. the owner. All-weather tennis court (please bring your equipment). Outdoor, open, shared swimming pool - available in the summer months and later if weather allows - in the attractive walled garden.
The village of Bow is a short distance away and has a pub and a well-stocked local convenience store. Due to the central location, the cottages make an ideal base from which to explore the north and south of Devon, as well as the beautiful surrounding Devon countryside. The regional towns of Crediton and Okehampton (considered the gateway to the Dartmoor National Park) are easily reached, and the towns provide a good range of shops and amenities.
On Dartmoor, there are plenty of walks for all ages and abilities to enjoy this stunning and dramatic area, as well as some pretty villages with pubs and tea rooms. There are many fine beaches and coves along north or south Devon, steam trains here and there, and a trip to Lundy Island can be arranged from Bideford Pier. Ask the owner for information on riverboat excursions along the Dart, especially from Totnes on Dartmoor. Numerous places of interest close including the R.H.S. Gardens at Rosemoor, Dartington Crystal (glass blowing etc.) and the unique, historic fishing village of Clovelly are not far from Port Isaac (remember ’Doc Martin?’). Visit the last castle to be built in England at Castle Drogo (National Trust), with a nearby excellent riverside pub. There is golf at Okehampton and nearby Crediton, or you can hire a bike and cycle the Tarka Trail at Great Torrington. Or simply relax amongst the beautiful grounds surrounding the Manor. Shop 1¼ miles, pub and restaurant ¾ mile.

A comfortable, well equipped cottage in beautiful grounds of the Manor House. The owners were friendly, helpful and generous in the cream teas left for us (the best scones we’ve ever tasted). We were allowed to wander around the estate and enjoy all there was to offer (in the summer, a swimming pool and tennis courts). The cottage was still a great place for an Autumn visit, with a log burner and 4 TVs, so everyone was happy! We especially liked the ‘Cinema room’. I would absolutely recommend and would love to return again.

A fantastic place to stay. Cottage was very inviting and had everything our family of five could possibly need. It was exceptionally clean and with a TV in every room there were no arguments on what to watch. There was even a Tassimo machine in the kitchen.The mezzanine floor which acts as the second reception room/third bedroom was perfect for movie nights and had a great selection of games in the wooden trunk.A cream tea welcomed us on arrival and the basket of tomatoes, cucumbers and nectarines given to us was very much appreciated, many thanks to the owners and their hard working gardener (you have a wonderful walled kitchen garden).The orchard and grounds behind the cottage were a perfect place for walking the dog.The pool is great and although it is not heated it did not stop us from using it every day. There is plenty of seating and lounging areas around it to rest and relax.We even managed a few games of tennis on the court.Would love to holiday here again and would recommend it highly.
