About this property

Newton Abbot 4.8 miles. Cob Cottage, a beautiful thatched, Grade II listed cob dwelling, thought to be over 400 years old, is set amidst the rolling Devonshire countryside, in Liverton near Bovey Tracey: the gateway to Dartmoor. Surrounded by breathtaking rural views, this charming cottage has been lovingly restored to retain its original features and is the perfect dog-friendly getaway for those who are looking to reconnect with nature. The cottage is well-positioned near the National Park but also within 30 mins of the coast. There is ample parking for two cars on arrival: walk through the wild planted eco garden to reach your private patio, a haven for alfresco dining. Step inside and be wowed by the exposed stonework and cob walls throughout the home, starting in the welcoming living/dining room, where you can relax after a day of adventure and dine as a four. The kitchen is well-equipped with all the essentials for a self-catered stay, where you can whip up delicious meals, before gathering over a bottle of wine, either indoors or out. As day turns to night, head upstairs and select between a spacious double bedroom with its own en-suite shower room, and a lovely twin, serviced by a ground-floor bathroom; a handy washing machine is also available in the bathroom. When it comes to exploring the local area, Newton Abbot and Bovey Tracey are just a short drive away and are great place to pick up some local produce. Locally, you’ll find a handy village store and The Carpenters Arms in Ilsington. Venture further into Dartmoor and visit Widecombe-in-the-Moor: a pretty thatched hamlet, with a 14th century church approached via winding country lanes: enjoy lunch or afternoon tea at the Café on the Green or sample the local ale at the famous Rugglestone Inn.

Unspoiled walking and cycling paths can be found nearby on Dartmoor's southeast slopes, which lead to Teignmouth's shore: a harbour town with a Victorian pier, a diving school, and a beautiful sandy beach. Consider stopping for a picnic at Haytor Rocks, a granite tor with breathtaking views of Dartmoor and the South Devon Coast. While away an afternoon browsing the antique shops and galleries of Ashburton.

And a visit to Totnes is a must, featuring a variety of independent shops, cafes, pubs, and riverside restaurants.

Stop off at The Maltsters or the Watermans Arms both located along the River Dart in Tuckenhay. Visit Totnes Castle, Leechwell Garden, or board the South Devon Railway for scenic views of the county. A little further afield, the beautiful harbour town of Dartmouth makes for a memorable day out with award-winning restaurants, cafes and shops: set beside the River Dart, filled with yachts and boats and boasting stunning views across to Kingswear.

Treat the kids to a day at Woodlands Family Theme Park or visit Agatha Christie’s Greenway. All this and more awaits you at Cob Cottage.

Newton Abbot is situated in the heart of The English Riviera, with its mild climate and thriving palm trees. The ancient market town now offers plenty of modern shops, both local and well-known high street chains and six leading brand supermarkets. There's also a racecourse where National Hunt racing takes place from spring until autumn, with craft fayres during the winter. Newton Abbot has a unique pub, the tap house and bottle shop, located in the building of what was a traditional working malthouse offering arguably the finest bottled beers in Devon. The seaside towns of Teignmouth, Shaldon and Dawlish are nearby and are fantastic destinations for families. Spend a day on the beach building sand castles and walk the impressive Victorian Pier at Teignmouth. The National Trust houses of Bradley Manor, Coleton Fishacre and Compton Castle and many others are well worth a visit, whilst the highlight of your stay will undoubtedly be the stunning beaches around Torquay and the many hidden coves such as Meadfoot, Oddicombe and further afield the pretty Ness Cove. And of course, the South West Coast Path provides stunning seascapes across the bay, with a popular stretch from Torquay Harbour to Daddyhole Plain, passing through Beacon Cove where Agatha Christie used to swim as a girl. Newton Abbot provides a fabulous base for an English seaside holiday all year round.
