Guests say

This summary has been generated using feedback from guests who have stayed at this property

Hillgate House is a well-loved cottage praised for its peacefulness, beautiful garden, and dog-friendly environment. Guests appreciate the cleanliness, the helpfulness of the owner, and the thoughtful touches. While some mention minor issues with facilities and noise from a nearby children's home, the overall sentiment is highly positive, with many planning to return.

Cleanliness

The cottage receives high marks for cleanliness, with multiple reviews mentioning its spotless condition upon arrival. The presence of cleaning supplies and the commendation of the cleaner further support a high score.

Location

The location is generally praised for its beauty and tranquility, with great walks and wildlife. However, some concerns about noise from a nearby children's home and fast-driving on the adjacent road slightly affect the score.

Comfort

Guests find the cottage comfortable, with special mentions of the cosy atmosphere, comfortable beds, and the large garden. The lack of twin beds in one room is a minor drawback mentioned by one guest.

Facilities

The cottage is well-equipped, but several reviews note the absence of Wi-Fi, a freezer, and issues with hot water and TV signal. The secure garden and cleanliness are positives, but the mentioned issues suggest room for improvement.

About this property

A detached 18th century stone-built farmhouse, standing in half an acre of enclosed grounds in the hamlet of Hemford, close to the Welsh Borders in the area known as The Marches. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, this traditional cottage offers simple and comfortable accommodation with a cosy atmosphere. The property boasts a wealth of original beams, a warm and welcoming sitting room with cast iron multi-fuel stove and a large garden, perfect for dining alfresco whilst enjoying the views of the nearby Callow and Corndon Hills. The garden also boasts a Shepherd's Hut which is ideal as a quiet retreat or for watching wildlife. Hillgate House makes a wonderful base from which to enjoy walking, cycling and horse riding, or visiting the historic towns of Shrewsbury, Bishop's Castle and Ludlow. With many attractions within easy reach amid scenic countryside, this is an ideal location for a relaxing and enjoyable holiday.

It is situated close to the Welsh Marches, the border between England and Wales, and these rolling hills are ideal for walking or cycling, especially as there are characterful villages and ancient castles to be found throughout. The market town of Bishop's Castle is nearby and here you can enjoy their weekly market or simply soak up the scenery from one of the many excellent pubs and restaurants. Hemford is also well-placed for many of Shropshire's main attractions, such as historic Shrewsbury, the charming town of Ludlow or the imposing Stokesay Castle. Railway enthusiasts will appreciate the elegance of the Severn Valley Railway and the World Heritage Centre at Ironbridge offers a glimpse of days gone by.
