About this property

Kingfisher House is a striking Victorian property set in the heart of Staithes, one of North Yorkshire’s most enchanting coastal villages. This property is perfect for friends or a family looking for a getaway as it boasts sea views to enjoy, a freestanding bath and table football for entertainment. Inside, the house retains all the warmth and grandeur of its heritage, with high ceilings, ornate coving, mosaic-tiled floors, and stained-glass details. The welcoming hallway leads into two elegant reception rooms, a bay-fronted lounge with a feature fireplace and picture windows framing countryside and sea views, and a charming dining room with another original fireplace, ideal for family meals and long conversations after a day by the coast.

The kitchen blends traditional style with modern practicality, boasting quartz worktops, dual ovens, a five-ring induction hob, and a dishwasher, perfect for preparing hearty breakfasts before a walk along the beach. Across the upper floors are six thoughtfully designed bedrooms, three with en-suite shower rooms. The first floor offers bright, spacious doubles, all with TVs for lazy mornings. Upstairs, the top floor provides two further bedrooms, both with TVs and one with table football. A fantastic bathroom, featuring a freestanding slipper bath and a separate shower, completes the interior. Outside, the enclosed front garden offers a peaceful spot to enjoy morning coffee among mature shrubs and sea air, while the rear courtyard provides parking for two cars.

From Kingfisher House, step out to explore the narrow cobbled streets of Staithes, where fishermen’s cottages cling to the cliffs and the harbour’s tidal waters shimmer beneath colourful boats. Visit the Staithes Gallery to see works inspired by the village’s famed artists’ colony, follow the coastal path for striking views of Cowbar Nab, or enjoy coffee and cake overlooking the sea. A short drive brings you to Whitby, where history and legend intertwine. Climb the 199 steps to the haunting ruins of Whitby Abbey, wander the old town’s quirky boutiques and tearooms, and indulge in award-winning fish and chips along the harbour.

In Saltburn-by-the-Sea, take a ride on the Victorian cliff lift, stroll along the elegant pier, or watch surfers from the promenade’s cafés. Head inland to Guisborough, the western gateway to the North York Moors National Park, where woodland trails weave through Guisborough Forest and the ruins of Gisborough Priory rise dramatically against the skyline. Kingfisher House is a rare opportunity to experience Yorkshire’s coast and countryside in a home rich with history, space, and timeless character.

The charming and sleepy seaside village of Staithes, with its cobbled streets and back alleys, is something of an artist’s dream. Its pretty houses and cottages are clustered around the old harbour and surrounded by high craggy cliffs on three sides, with a sheltered sandy beach set amongst the rocky coastline. The village can claim connections with Captain Cook who was apprenticed to a draper near the harbour. Nowadays, Staithes is a must for anyone visiting the Yorkshire Coast and has a good selection of pubs, shops and tea rooms. Staithes is still home to an rnli lifeboat station and a small fleet of cobles (fishing boats) landing fish, crab and lobster, with boat trips for birdwatching, fishing and even whale watching available. It’s also the location of the popular BBC children’s TV series, Old Jack’s Boat. Staithes has a strong attraction for artists, with an annual Art and Heritage Festival, galleries and artists studios with art courses and workshops regularly on offer. There’s a free Illusion Trail, which guides visitors around the network of ginnels (alleyways), with trail guides available locally. The best views of the town can be enjoyed from the Cleveland Way which runs down the cliff to the sea’s edge. Altogether a superb base for exploring the Yorkshire Coast, visiting the larger resorts of Whitby or Scarborough and enjoying the moorland villages of the North York Moors National Park.
