Tigh na Maraiche, named “House of the Mariners” in Gaelic, in recognition of the sea-faring crofters who lived there over the generations, is tucked away in the tiny crofting community of Keils, just a short distance from the main village of Craighouse.

Surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature, it is the perfect spot to truly “get away from it all”. Walking into the cottage through the lean-to sunroom overlooking the garden, you’ll find very traditional, welcoming and cosy accommodation. The main feature of the open-plan living/dining/kitchen area is the stone fireplace and wood-burning stove, ideal for a cosy evening around the fire. Traditional wood lined ceiling and interior décor give you the idea that you may have stepped back in time, yet you have a good Wi-Fi connection as well as a fully equipped kitchen. The comfy double bed promises a good night’s sleep after a day exploring everything the island has to offer.

You’ll love relaxing in the wee sunroom, whilst listening to the sounds of the sea in the distance. There are two stone buildings, one which offers storage for bikes and kayaks, the other houses the utility room, with freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer. Just a five-minute walk down the hill and you’re on the shore looking over the very picturesque Small Isles Bay – you can also catch a good glimpse of the bay from the garden of Tigh na Maraiche.

Beyond the islands in the bay, Knapdale can be seen on the mainland, separated from Jura by the stretch of water known as the Sound of Jura. Another five minutes along the road, takes you into Craighouse, the only village on Jura, where there is a hotel, the world-famous Jura Distillery, the village shop/post office, and a gift shop/tearoom. Climb the famous “Paps” of Jura and explore the miles of endless mountain.

Beautiful quintessential little cottage in a beautiful location. Walking distance to the shop/cafe/beaches and walks up into the hills around. Really beautiful part of the world ❤️

We wanted a quiet location for a few days and we definitely picked the correct cottage, lovely old building with plenty of character , our two spaniels loved the walks in the area, we love wildlife and saw plenty, golden eagle and otters, I highly recommend this place, we will hopefully return.

This is our second stay at this quite wonderful location.. on the Isle of Jura.. our stays were only 5 weeks apart and we stayed for two weeks on both occasions.. stunningly beautiful beyond what language affords us in description.. it really is beyond words.. Jura is jam packed with natures bounty.. a unique ecology that leaves you spellbound.. a whole Island incomparable to anything we have both ever experienced.. it’s an Island literally untouched by the ‘pollution’ of a world filled with Natures battle against the modern worlds toxic imposition on Her health and well being.. picture this.. my Lady and I learned very early on..(but improved over time).. where to go and when to go to observe at close quarters Golden Eagles.. Hen Harriers.. on the wing hunting.. and a plethora of small bird Afro European migrants.. (and so much more besides).. we highly recommend the boat tours on offer from Jura Boat Tours.. local born and bred.. off to service in the armed forces.. then returned to fill our wee heads with knowledge.. told to us with an authority that makes you keenly listen and watch from a differing perspective.. educating and feeding us both to fully appreciate the ‘bounty’ before us.. which has etched itself on our memories.. that like a powerful magnet will pull us back time and time again.. Locals are very decent people.. welcoming and egregious.. and from an Island with a population of less than 200 souls.. they made us feel as if we had known them all our life’s.. warm and welcoming without over inserting themselves into your life unless you invite them.. we leave the Island with a deep sense of regret yet.. the thought of going back to Jura leaves us with ‘Great Expectations’.. looking forward to going back.. which we will soon.. This Cottage is filled with a ‘Spiritual Peace’ that you have to experience to fully understand.. but dating back to the 1740’s in origin.. and still within the custodial care of the same family.. time to meet the ‘Ancestors’.. we are both sure they were watching over us.. wonderful stuff.. The cottage everything within its walls that you will ever need.. in a location that is quite stunningly beautiful.. highly recommended by us both..
