Guests say

The Old Schoolhouse offers a spacious and peaceful retreat, ideal for families, groups, and dog owners seeking relaxation and access to beautiful gardens and local attractions. Guests praise its size, comfort, and location near Stranraer and Portpatrick. While the cottage is well-equipped and provides a cosy atmosphere, some reviews mention areas needing attention, such as cleanliness and maintenance. The property’s value for money and wildlife-rich grounds are frequently highlighted, making it a popular choice for repeat visitors.

Cleanliness is mixed, with several guests noting issues such as dog hair, cobwebs, dirty dishes, and kitchen cupboards needing a deep clean. However, bathrooms and bedding are generally described as clean, though some mention pillow quality concerns.

The location is highly praised for its tranquillity, proximity to Stranraer and Portpatrick, and beautiful, extensive gardens. Guests appreciate the peaceful setting and easy access to local attractions.

The cottage is described as spacious, warm, and comfortable, with large rooms, multiple lounges, and cosy beds. Some minor issues with bedding and dated decor are mentioned, but overall comfort is rated positively.

Facilities are generous, including large living spaces, conservatory, and gardens. However, several guests report maintenance issues such as broken appliances, missing or damaged blinds, and garden upkeep. The property is well-equipped but would benefit from more attention to detail.

Some guests were disappointed by the lack of a welcome pack or starter supplies for the fire, despite expectations set by the listing. While the host responded quickly to issues, gifts or extras are not guaranteed.

We have no satnave on our car, the directions we received were of no help to us. We phoned the contact no. and the buildings Manager met us at Lidl Car park and took us to the school house. We would never have found this on our own.On entering the property by the back door the front door was blocked and was a fire risk. The fridge was not switched on now wi-fi on No welcome pack no instruction for the TVs 5 remotes in one room and 3 in the other lounge with no instruction. The lounge was covered in dog hair, we had to move the settee which was like tumble weed under the furniture. My husband cleaned the floors 3 times with a microfibre mop, and cleaned the hoover as it was blocked with hair and cleaned the filter. the bedrooms upstairs were clean. The pillow cases for the pillpws were to small for the pillows which made them hard to use. The bachroom sick up stairs was craked and leaking and we only found out when Chris the plumber turn up to fix the guttering. The gutters were all blocked and water was coming into the lounge the patio doors the glazing was blown, and the green angee outside was smelly and not suitable for childred and dogs. Patio area was not clean and the wicker patio set 2 seats were covered in greenmould. on friday we went for luch and came back to a serious flood over the bridge on the access road, the water was 2-3 deep cascading over it, so we inched over it because of the fear of water getting into our Hybrid Car and damaging the electrics. We left friday night at 7pm getting back at 11.30pm We feel that compensation should be paid for this neglected property and the danger it put us in

It needs a deep clean, kitchen cupboards dirty. Only two rings working on the cooker. Toilet seat broken in the ensuite. No welcome pack and firewood as stated in the info on your website. Even though I was contacted before arriving that I couldn't get in until 4pm. Didn't get the heads up about the cooker, only when queried the next day. Wood was dropped off after querying it. Lovely location, beds comfortable.

We loved the position of the cottage. Lots of garden. Not dog secure and quite overgrown. The cooker hob only had 2 working rings. When we arrived the kettle was broken and the stair gate was falling off. No dogs allowed upstairs. They did rectify the kettle and stairgate quickly but not the cooker hob. We managed but a larger party would not. Toilet seats upstairs falling off. Mix of crockery. Kitchen needs a clear of odd bits and pieces. Ants in the back entrance and in the lounge. Bedding was clean but don’t look inside the pillow cases as the pillows are disgusting. Some curtains falling off the wall. Gardener told us he would bring back logs but never did.
