Exuding a traditional aura and echoing touches of art deco style in reference to the decade the cottage was built, Branklyn Cottage provides a charming base for a couple or a group of four to escape to Scotland. With stunning landscaped gardens, that guests will have access to outside of opening hours, this property sits in a truly delightful location for all-year-round visits. Follow the stairs up to the first floor when sleep takes hold and settle within the master double bedroom, with a luxurious chaise-lounge resting at the end of the bed, and a tiny reading alcove for the book lovers amongst us. A second bedroom has two single beds, complete with quality linen and blankets, with both rooms served by the shower room, perfect for a refreshing morning rinse. Guests have full access to the spectacular Branklyn Garden, created in the 1920s by Dorothy and John Renton, cultivated with love to be a home to over 4,500 species of plants from all over the world. Now run by the National Trust for Scotland, you can wander the grounds and marvel at the picturesque scenery. Perth was Scotland's ancient capital for five centuries and is still a hub of activity today; situated on the banks of the River Tay, you can delight in riverside walks before stopping in one of the local cafés or tearooms, discovering fabulous bars and restaurants in the evenings too. Branklyn Garden is also home to a tearoom, (open between April and end of October) offering a perfect place to stop for your morning coffee before your adventures begin. Stroll into Perth and head to Perth Museum and Art Gallery, which lies within a Parthenon-inspired building, before marvelling at The Black Watch Castle and Museum, with Rodney Gardens making a wonderful spot for a picnic. A little further outside the centre is Huntingtower Castle, Scone Palace and Murray Star Maze, while Perthshire is also known as 'Big Tree Country' and is a wondrous area for woodland walks, with the peaks of Schiehallion and Ben Lawers being great for keen ramblers. Hill of Tarvit Mansion, Falkland Palace and Gardens, Dollar Glen and The Hermitage are more National Trust for Scotland attractions within 30 miles, all worth the visit! The cottage is well maintained and was lovely and clean, with a welcome tray waiting for us on arrival, consisting of scones, jam, tea, coffee, shortbread biscuits and even some hot chocolate; there were even some dog biscuits, bowls and towels for our dog. There is plenty of storage in the bedrooms and plenty of clothes hangers also. The kitchen is quite small but provided everything needed; cutlery, pots, pans, plates, bowls, baking trays etc. There was an under-counter fridge/freezer, dishwasher, oven, hob, microwave and toaster. The gardens are excellently maintained and were in their early stages of blossoming. Every time I went for a walk through the garden I noticed something different! There is also a tea room serving a collection of drinks, cakes and scones; all of which were sampled and enjoyed! Special mention for the cheese scones which were made on the premises every day and were delicious. There is,parking for bikes and one space just at the entrance to the gardens for a small car although the car park for Branklyn Gardens is just a few minutes walk. Now for just a few small negatives; we were mainly ‘self-catering’ for our 2 week stay and had arranged for our shopping to be delivered, (not realising that there is a large Morrisons literally 10 minutes drive away) but when it arrived there wasn’t much space in the kitchen to store dry products. Staff arrive very early on a morning and their storage space/ plant growing area is right outside the cottage main door, so don’t expect to be able to ‘sleep in’ after 8/9am, and there is a small garden border just outside the main downstairs window. This didn’t cause any real problem for us but the dog didn’t like people being so close to the window! The staff were exceptional, very friendly and always stopped for a chat; you could tell that they were all interested and happy with what they were doing but also interested to hear our views etc. There was nothing that was too much trouble for them. I would certainly recommend Branklyn Gardens and Cottage. A lovely place to stay in gorgeous surroundings, with brilliant staff and volunteers.
