Daliburgh 3.3 miles. Enjoying a superb setting close to the beach at Uig on South Uist in the Outer Hebrides is this traditional cottage, Corncrake Cottage. Ideal for families looking to discover the delights of the Outer Hebrides, Corncrake Cottage is the perfect destination. The elusive Corncrake can be heard from the garden and has been spotted by previous guests. This is a rare occurrence as this bird is a master at disguising itself in the long grass. Inside the décor is traditional yet stylish with wood panelling creating a feeling of bringing the outdoors in and the elegant sitting room is warm and inviting with a good-sized seating area overlooking the wonderful views from the house and is a wonderful spot to curl up on the sofas, soak up the views and enjoy spending some quality family time together. The sun room is sublime whether it’s watching the sun come up in the morning or watching it set in the evening but either way, it is the perfect place to reflect on your Hebridean adventure. The compact but well-equipped kitchen has everything you need for preparing delicious food for your family and is a superbly informal room in which to dine together and tuck into some tantalising local produce. When bedtime calls, take your pick from the king-size, twin or children’s bunk beds, which should keep any combination of family happy and all bedrooms are well-presented. Step outside to the well-maintained wrap-around gardens and you can really immerse yourself in your holiday; breathing in the fresh Hebridean air, soaking up the tranquil setting and keeping an eye out for birds and wildlife which frequent the local area. Children can run freely around the garden while the adults can chill out on the picnic bench and switch off from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Getting out and about from Corncrake Cottage couldn’t be easier with loads of see and do both on the doorstep and a little further afield if you are willing to jump in the car; the reward is lots of wonderful scenery as you’re driving! Nearby Garriemonie Beach is the perfect beach for exploring, making sandcastles, collecting shells, wild swimming, dog walking, or whatever activity takes your fancy. For a spot of history pay a visit to the Kildonan Museum and the famous Kilpheder Wheelhouse, both of which are just a short drive away. Hop over to the Isle of Eriskay for a day out or head north to visit North Uist, Benbecula and Grimsay. If you are a keen nature lover then you must call into the Balranald Nature Reserve for an insight into the local flora, fauna and wildlife of the region. Whatever kind of holiday you are after whether it’s a chilled out relaxing time you’re looking for or something more adrenaline-fuelled, there is something for everyone at Corncrake Cottage. The islands can be reached by flights from Edinburgh, Glasgow or Inverness; or by ferry from Uig on Skye to Lochmaddy, or Mallaig to Lochboisdale.
Daliburgh is a town on South Uist in the Outer Hebrides and is known for being a crofting town. There is a memorial here to commemorate the life and works of Donald Allan MacDonald, a Gaelic poet who lived in Daliburgh in the mid 20th century. It is a great base from which to explore a fantastic selection of activities from fishing and walking to diving and birdwatching. The nearby Askernish Golf Course is always popular and was originally designed by ‘Old’ Tom Morris and is popular with golfers keen to test themselves on this challenging course. Dining options include fish and chips from the Burnside Chip Shop or for something a little more fancy dine in at the Borrodale Hotel. While you are in Daliburgh you can stock up on supplies at the supermarket and there is also a number of other shops including gifts shops. A short distance from Daliburgh is the fascinating Kildonan Museum and the birthplace of Flora MacDonald as well as a host of fabulous beaches just waiting to be discovered.
