What our customers say about their holidays

2 Borthwen is an attractive property in a good location just off the main street.
Arriving on a busy weekend access off the High Street by the butchers is tricky. The first property on the left park 3 cars there leaving a very narrow space to enter. Anything other than a medium sized car would struggle at such times. There was parking either side of the junction as well at different times making visibility poor to pull out onto the main street at busy times The property is semi detached & parking for both is at the frontage of 2 Borthwen so this affects privacy & security for dogs if, as is permitted, the adjoining property had up to 3 cars. Any cars from the adjoining property need to open the gates to use the parking area anyway. The gates can be left open but only if dogs, young children won't be using the outside space. The small garden needs a lot of attention & looks nothing like the photograph. Internally, the external door to the main room can't be opened fully, nor can the one to the bathroom which was very frustrating. The main room is set out in a basic way with almost no decorative touches. Lamps (other than the harsh lighting of the industrial standard lamp) would add ambience. The floor, whilst safe underfoot, looks shabby & needs refurbishment. The garden equipment stored in the open under stairs space adds nothing to the feel of the space. The stairs are steep, slightly uneven & the handrail is inadequate. This should be mentioned in the description. Upstairs is cramped but to be expected due to the age of the property. The kitchen has the basics. Standard of cleaning seemed adequate although the internal section of the external door frames (visible when the doors are open) was very dirty.

2 Borthwen Cottages is a delightful little cottage and perfectly placed for exploring the surrounding area.
I would definitely recommend and would not be averse to staying again. We had our Jack Russell with us and so it was wonderful that we had a safe garden for him. We made the mistake of leaving the gates open one evening when we went out and came back to a driveway covered in sheep droppings so we had obviously had visitors whilst we were out. Just be aware of this (any future stayers) as how we avoided treading in it in the dark I'll never know. You will need a car if you are wanting to go out for meals / drinks although you could probably stretch to a half hour walk to Ysgethin. That said, nothing is too far away. The beds and bedding were very comfortable although the double bed did feel like a very small double. There are no wardrobes but there are plenty of hooks on the walls to hang clothes with some hangers provided. The kitchen and bathrooms are very small although the shower is a great size. A couple of times we could have done with the heating turning up but despite following the instructions it would not allow us to go higher than the preset temperature. We had good weather but this would be a problem in colder months. The driveway area could definitely do with a tidy up and the lawn area could do with a couple of hours spent in it. There is no washing machine, there is no room for one in the cottage, but could perhaps have one put in the outside shed maybe? We had friends staying down the road so managed to use theirs a couple of times. Could also do with possibly a few more plates / glasses etc but that's being really picky. Definitely worth a visit and would stay again.

1* This was my second visit to Gorwel as we really enjoyed the location but we wonât be returning in the future.
We found dog feces on the kitchen table on arrival and quickly removed it due to the smell. We decided to inform the owner Bernard who was quick to tell us that there was no dog in the accommodation before us. I didnât think for 1 minute a dog had done this. Someone had clearly walked in it then placed their footwear on the table. Easy mistake and an apology would have been sufficient. Unfortunately I didnât take any photos in my haste to remove it so the owner didnât believe me. He was extremely rude and suggested I contact Skyeâs if I wanted compensation or alternative accommodation. Sykes were helpful in suggesting a deep clean and possibly compensation as we also found further discrepancies in the living area and the kitchen. Unfortunately the owner was not willing to apologise or accept the blame which we found quite shocking! I have never had to complain before and I expected a better response from the owner whom in my opinion was extremely rude! After removing the duvet covers I was even more horrified to see all the stains on the duvet. Absolutely disgusting! Sykes you should review this property again. A little bit more attention to detail could quite easily make this property a 4* but unfortunately the owner isnât interested.

Gorwel is exactly as described.
The views from the living room are fantastic. We found the beds comfortable and our kitchen had everything we needed and more. The patio area is great and catches plenty of sun. It all made for a peaceful stay. Negatives - not Gorwel's fault but a Toyota Yaris parks constantly ( on double yellow lines !! ) adjacent to Gorwel's named parking bay making manouvering in and out really difficult. We did find the living room furniture low and very uncomfortable but that is subjective. A bigger problem is lack of Wi Fi. This is so universal these days that I hadn't even checked to see if it was available when making the booking. We are an older couple , not youngsters never off our smart phones , but it was still an issue for us and had I checked beforehand I would not have booked Gorwel. This is 2024 and some things are standard these days. Lastly ( and again not Gorwel's fault ) - the pub does not do food on Mon or Tues AND if it's quiet they don't bother on other days even though food is advertised for those days. The takeaways in the village a few miles away do not deliver.

It was wonderful to stay in a typical terrace house where the slate workers lived in former times.
The house seems to be newly renovated with all modern facilities and comfort. Very cosy for two persons or a small family of four - living room, kitchen and bath on the ground floor, three bed rooms on the top floor. Ideal location to climb the Moelwynion and to explore the old slate ruins in Cwm Orthin and Cwm Croesor above Tanygrisiau. Behind the back yard of the house, the Ffestiniog Railway steams in sighting distance. The small village street in front of the house has regular bus service to Blaenau. The hots cared for many details and even placed some fresh fruits, coffee and tee in the modern kitchen and even wood for the fireplace. When I remember our stay at Holland Terrace, I would like to come back immediately. The only small bit of a pity may be that the steps at the back-side of the house cannot be used to access a small sitting area in the back-yard. So, the only outside sitting area is at the front (street) side of the house. But anyway: There was surely nothing we didn't like.
