What our customers say about their holidays
Danny - Verified booking
I feel compelled to share my recent experience at Shipwreck Cottage in Haverigg, not as a critique, but as a sincere warning to potential guests.
Our stay at this property was nothing short of a nightmare, and I genuinely believe that others should be spared from what we endured. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this property has some serious issues that go beyond a mere bad day. The most egregious problem was the state of the jacuzzi. It was contaminated with black mould and bacteria, rendering it unsightly and a serious health hazard. Despite bringing this matter to the property ownerâs and Sykes Holiday Cottagesâ attention, they failed to address the underlying issue. Superficial "cleaning" only masked the problem, leaving us to wonder about the true safety and cleanliness of this property's amenities. But the issues didn't stop there. The lack of safety notices is a cause for great concern. My wife had a terrifying encounter when the dining room airer fell and hit her on the head. We were given no warning about any potential risks associated with the use of this equipment, leaving us to question the property ownerâs commitment to guest safety. Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of our stay was the owners and Sykes unyielding stance on their no-refund policy. Even in the face of such severe issues, they refused to consider any compensation for the inconvenience, health concerns, and overall disappointment that marred our holiday. In summary, my advice is clear: stay far away from Shipwreck Cottage in Haverigg. Our experience was nothing short of a disaster, and it's evident that this property owner and Sykes prioritise greed and profiteering over the well-being and satisfaction of their guests. There are countless other accommodations in the area that offer both quality and safety, and I implore you to explore those options instead. Your holiday should be a time of relaxation and enjoyment; you should never have to worry about your health and safety being compromised. Learn from our unfortunate experience and choose a different place to stay.

Really nice place to stay.
Right in the centre of everything from walking / driving distance. The apartment was clean and tidy upon arrival and instructions how to collect the keys from the apartment prior to arrival was very clear. The apartment has the basic things you need for your stay. To access the apartment you need to go up around 30 steps so if you have walking difficultyâs or mobility issues I would check this prior to booking. Salt , pepper , oil , hand soap , washing up liquid , cloths , tea towels and limited dishwasher tablets was also provided what we was unaware off. Also a welcome box with tea bags / coffee / biscuits / sugar / milk sticks was in the apartment kitchen , this was a unexpected nice touch. The allocated parking spot was available the whole time we arrived although upon check out there was a car blocking us in behind our car , but lucky we could get out from a tight squeeze down the other parking space next to it as there was not a car there. If there was we would have not been able to get out. The night before the same car was also blocking us in but by time we went out late afternoon it was gone so had no issue getting out. The only thing I would say and it has been mentioned on another review is maybe a welcome pack , as we was not sure where to put the rubbish and instructions on the Wi-Fi code and maybe how to use the hive and what to do with used towels / if we was required to strip the bedding etc. Overall though it was a lovely stay and would definitely recommend Windermere Crescent , brilliant for small familyâs or a couple.

The 2 bedroom cottage was absolutely stunning.
On arrival the owner who greeted us was very helpful. Advised us on a few things (from a distance due to Coronavirus) but was helpful throughout our stay if we needed anything. Very clean to walk in to which is important right now with Coronavirus! The kitchen was well equipped. The living area was very comfortable and cosy. The bedrooms were a good size with 1 ensuite and the beds were incredibly comfortable. Our room was lovely with the patio doors opening out onto the garden. The large garden area with lovely patio seating was wonderful to sit out in....the large lawn was loved by our 2 dogs too and very safe as it was all fenced in. All cooking utensils provided so good for self catering. (Our only feed back is to check plates, bowls, cups and glasses as we did find mugs and cups with chips in them. Of which we returned 2 of the mugs but found more chipped cups) But other than that it's a fabulous place to stay. Some nice dog walks locally too, especially back across the railway line and down to the station...a nice quiet walk. The Duke Of Cumberland Pub is about a 10 minute drive, but highly recommended for meals. We would certainly stay here again!

The cottage was quite remote, and I don't feel this was made obvious on the information.
It tells you it's in a village, it's not. It is a tiny hamlet. The cottage itself has very recently been converted so is new. The bedrooms are excellent as is the bathroom and kitchen. But the living area for us was too cluttered and small, and this spoiled it for us somewhat because we like to settle down in evenings either watching a film or reading. It didn't have that cosy feel. Also parking if all 3 adjoining cottages are in use isn't easy. The small entrance makes driving in to the parking area a little difficult if you have a larger car. We have a Honda CRV and needed to bring in the wing mirrors every time. Anything wider and you wouldn't be able to get through. We also didn't feel there was any privacy from the other cottages if you wanted to sit out. The pub which is in the hamlet and 1 minute walk away is excellent however. Friendly staff and excellent food. Sadly we wouldn't return as the drive to the cottage every day is a little too much off the beaten track for us. For others I realise it's not an issue.

Fantastic cottage, spacious and clean.
Good amenities, lovely large kitchen/dining room/lounge with log burner- you could help yourself to extra logs for £4 a bag and just leave the money when you leave. Our two Boston Terriers loved the big enclosed garden and we loved the large courtyard where you can park right outside your door. Great location to visit Hadrianâs wall, Gretna Green etc and loads of walks, parks, hills and forests nearby. Great pub serving lovely food, The Howard Arms a short drive away in Brampton and a cracker The Samson Inn in Gilsland where we ate after Hadrianâs wall at Housesteads. All in all a fab stay, we even asked to stay an extra night and luckily they had availability. Highly recommended.
