What our customers say about their holidays
Clare - Verified booking
We were looking for somewhere that could sleep 6, accommodate 2 dogs and 2 cars near Robin Hoodâs Bay last minute ish as we booked mid May to stay the first week of July.
Only 4 of us stayed in the end due to other commitments. The cottage is lovely as is the courtyard and the instructions from the owners were great. A couple of reasons why Iâve given 4 rather than 5 stars, the decor is a bit dated, to be fair the photos are accurate so not a surprise, but a change of carpet and new tablecloths would make a huge difference as well as getting rid of the random plates in the window alcoves and the ornaments, there were also a few cobwebs. We stay in cottages pretty frequently and Byre Cottage is the only time we have come across single ply toilet paper, you donât need to get triple ply, quilted, but I didnât even know you could still buy single ply loo roll. There were teabags, coffee and sugar which is always nice. Not so nice was the empty salt, no hand soap, washing up liquid and one dishwasher tablet for a weekâs stay. I donât mind bringing these things, but when you donât know theyâre not provided that itâs annoying. Every other cottage weâve ever stayed in has provided pump hand soap and either washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets or both. The hot taps in the en suite and the kitchen were difficult to stop as you would think it was off for it to then start a slow trickle and we would have to really turn it tightly to stop it. The shower in the en-suite was great, good temperature, good water pressure but would take on average 6 presses of the on/off switch to turn off which was weird. DVD, TV and dated skybox, thereâs a DVD you can âaskâ to watch, maybe stretch to a copy for each cottage or hit the charity shop for a few classics, I appreciate DVDs are a thing of the past but when only the TV in the master bedroom had Netflix and Prime other options are better as I donât want to sit on my bed watching tv with my family. We bought a few DVDs for 50p each when we were out and about as there wasnât even iplayer on the tv in the living area. If tv in the bedroom had been downstairs that would have solved it. Some leaflets with details of local walks and attractions or a couple of books about the local area would have been nice to have. That said the welcome pack did say you could call at the house to ask for anything and replace later or buy it at the time. We accidentally left a dog bed but the £15 charge before P&P to return it to us was a bit steep so we will just buy another one. Directions to Robin Hoodâs Bay were easy to follow and itâs a nice 30 minute walk to get there. Byre Cottage is a great base for exploring this part of the country and I would recommend it. A pleasant stay but with a few tweaks would have been a great stay.

The house had a closed-up, unwelcoming feel when we arrived.
It obviously hadnât been cleaned or aired that day. I donât know how long it had been left for, but it must have been a while as it needed a thorough vacuuming before we could settle in. There seemed to be an infestation of spiders. An enormous one had made a nest in one of the basins â it must have been there for some time. There were lots of leaves in the hall that had obviously blown in through the front door at some point. I would say the whole house needs a deep clean. There are lots of shelves and ledges and little nooks with ornaments, and itâs all very dusty. The windows need cleaning, especially looking out into the garden. The lawn hadnât been cut in quite a while, so the garden didnât feel very welcoming either. The garden furniture could also have done with a clean, and some cushions and a parasol for the table would be nice. The bedding was clean and there were plenty of towels, but they were nearly all mis-matched and not the best quality. One had bleach marks all over it. The pillows were all very thin and poor. All of the mattresses, except one, were dreadful â you could feel every spring. There is only one usable shower â the blue bathroom only has a shower attachment on the bath taps, though there is nothing wrong with the water pressure. The twin room has a shower, but the water only comes out as a trickle and the shower head is fixed right at one side, so itâs impossible to actually wash in it. The basin in that room is all mouldy round the taps, and one of the taps is extremely loose. There is good water pressure in the main bedroomâs ensuite â and this room has the only comfortable mattress â but there is an appalling smell from the drains, which does permeate the entire house when you have to close the windows to go out for the day. Positives: good, quiet position. Very easy walk into Bamburgh. Wi-Fi worked perfectly the whole time we were there.

The parkdean resort was amazing.
The location, facilities and entertainment were great for a family holiday. We ate on site a couple of time and used the passes to access the pool and clubhouse I. The evening and both adults and children enjoyed it thoroughly. However, the caravan was not uo to the same standard as we expected from such a great site. The interior was dated, there were lots of unnecessary items in the caravan that couldn't be used such as lamps situated where there were no plug sockets. There was a lack of plug in general which meant that you couldn't watch TV at the same time as having a lamp on. The kitchen was very basic. The grill wouldn't stay on and to use it, you would have to keep the gas knob pressed in. There was only one shelf in the oven, which meant that cooking for 5 people was tricky. From staying in other caravans there seemed a lack of storage space in bedrooms. We also couldn't seem to find any instructions on how the heating worked. When we arrived the shower was on and the bathroom floor was flooded, I believe there had been a problem with the water on site before we arrived so assumed that when the cleaners were in they forgot to turn off the shower. The light switch in the bathroom was also too short. This meant that 2 of the 3 children couldn't use the bathroom at night as they couldn't reach the pull cord. It was also very hard to shut the double bedroom door, which meant waking the children up eheb the adults went to bed. I think it would also be worth mentioning that, as you are surrounded by established trees that it is quite a common noise to hear acorns falling onto the roof. This wasn't a problem but 2 of the children were a bit scared of the noise on the first night.

Although the location of this property is fantastic, we do not recommend it as somewhere to stay on holiday.
Poorly equipped with miss-matched cutlery, few plates, bowls, mugs etc. just enough for the amount of people which isnât great! Most importantly no blind or curtain on widow in the double bedroom upstairs- the neighbours over the road could literally watch us sleeping (it is a velux window that is below the height of the over road neighbours bedroom so they can literally look down into the room)!!!! Not to mention having nothing to block the light when we were trying to sleep! The upstairs shower is duct taped to the floor so very wobbly and the downstairs shower leaks into the hallway to a huge extent and as it is tiled flooring makes a huge safety issue- our children slipped a couple of times despite us mopping after every shower. The double bed upstairs is also very uncomfortable and lumpy! The owners clearly do not care about the property or about the comfort of the people staying there, itâs a shame as the layout is great and lovely location. Also the property was not in a clean state when we arrived. There was so so much dog hair from previous stays- there were literally hair balls in the corners of the living room and we had to retrieve a toy from under the sofa- I wish we left it there as it was covered in dust and hair! There was cutlery in the draw that still had oil and what we think was honey on so we then had to wash everything to make sure it was clean enough to use. Sorry, we cannot recommend this property and hope Sykes contact the owner regarding the lack of privacy/ blinds in the double room upstairs as well as the safety issues regarding both showers.

On arrival I would suggest a map of the site be available at reception as it took a while finding the Lodge.
Also, having to walk to the lodge to pick up the key and the fob needed to gain access with car was a pain. The lodge was clean and the welcoming basket was a nice touch. The bed in the main bedroom was very comfortable however, the 2nd bedroom had a matress which was smaller than the base and not to comfortable. The recliner couch looked good on photo's (home from home), but wasn't comfy at all. The back was loose and to far back when upright. I felt like turning it up end to tighten any loose bolt's as I have done with my own. There was an upright vacumm which was empty on first sight but wasn't picking up. I took a closer look and found the pipe and filters totally blocked. I cleared it and washed the filters, although not the best it did pick up. Our stay was relaxing and the weather was good and hot which meant the balcony was very well used and enjoyed. The view of the lake was very nice. It would have been good to have the use of a cantilver umbrella as the deck was in full sun from midday until sunset, also a couple of fans would have given some relief from the heat indoors. These additions would have made are stay perfect. All in all we had a good stay, liked the site with all amenities close by. We would recommend this lodge.
