What our customers say about their holidays

Positive points: Very accommodating owner - allowed us to check in anytime after 12 on Christmas Day and let us leave at 10:30 on checkout day.
Lovely location - quiet and with pretty views. Comfortable beds Plenty of towels Toilet rolls, dishwasher tablets and soap powder provided Kitchen good, and very well equipped Lots of games and dvds provided Excellent car parking Dog friendly Pretty Christmas tree set up for us Lovely hot tub Negative points: Access is along single track road for one mile, with very few passing places. On arrival we were informed that the owner had had to put the cold water taps for the upstairs sinks off, as there was hammering in the pipes. The implication was that this had happened that week, and as it was Christmas the plumberâs visit would have to wait. On tracking back in the reviews, I read that people have complained about this since last August and the issue has not been fixed. It was very problematic not having cold water upstairs, especially as the hot water ran extremely hot. We ended up having to use an upstairs toilet and going downstairs to wash hands. Had to clean teeth with hot water. The flushing of the toilets was a bit hit or miss. The downstairs toilet was mostly abandoned by us as it was so unreliable. No functioning lock on the downstairs toilet. The conservatory is unusable in the winter. Despite a heater being provided, it was extremely cold and damp. Mould on the walls in places. When it rains hard, the roof leaks in various places, especially onto the tv and dvd player. You wouldnât really want to sit and relax in it anyway, as it is rather a hotch potch of old furniture and dog things and the dryer. Not really like the photo on the web. En-suite shower dirty and desperately in need of bleach. We were shown the food for the peacockâs daily visit. I didnât put it out as it contained raisins, and these are toxic to dogs and we had two dogs with us. The fact there is a peacock who visits the property can be construed both in a positive and negative light. For us, with two dogs, it was a negative. Overall, it needs a good dose of TLC.

I asked a number of questions about the property and all the replies I got just pointed me back to the website listing (which didn't answer my questions - that's why I contacted Sykes directly).
I decided to book anyway as the cottage was very good value that week (9th-16th Dec). First of all we had great trouble finding the place as the directions were not at all clear- and when you do eventually arrive you find the cottage is very confusingly called Quat' Saisons not Wye Valley Cottage so you think you have the wrong place. The location is beautiful with lovely views and ideal for us as dog owners with walks straight from the door. Disappointed with the cottage itself which is distinctly average. Jerry-built with poor quality fixtures and fittings, the focus has clearly been on economy so while it is functional there is nothing that made me think that the place was particularly loved and cared for. The place is tiny - OK for us as a couple but would be a real squash for a family. Heating is by inefficient storage heaters with free standing fires which we had to use most of the time as it was a really cold week. Draught whipping in under the front door which opens straight onto the lounge. Kitchen rather poorly equipped. Shower rather weak. As I say, it was all functional and I only paid £255 for a week so I pretty much got what I expected. The following week (Christmas week) was nearly £700 and had I paid that much I would not have been at all happy. We enjoyed our week because of the location and would stay in the village again but not at Wye Valley Cottage. It's a shame as with a bit of love and care it could be a beautiful little place.

We had a splendid week at Bullfinch cottage, Kingsland.
It was easy to find, even though we werenât familiar with the district, especially with its own sign at the end of the road. The parking space in front of the property was good. The cottage was delightful, immaculate, comfortable and with everything we needed to make us feel this was the place for us. The kitchen was well equipped, the dining area excellent and we enjoyed relaxing in front of the smart TV before repairing to the excellent bedrooms. It was really peaceful to be in the quiet depth of the countryside, while within easy reach of shops and towns. Every day we were able to visit a place of interest including Eastnor Castle and Brockhampton Estate and the jewel of the holiday, the Mappa Mundi in Hereford Cathedral. We can recommend Bullfinch as a tranquil haven as well as an excellent base to explore the region. Oh yes we want to return!!! Maureen

We really enjoyed our stay.
The cottage is situated in a beautiful and peaceful location. We've rebooked for November! You can walk into the woods, or along the river directly from the cottage. Watching the peregrines was a highlight. In terms of feedback some kitchen items need attention. Only three teaspoons available. The frying pan needs replacing. Generally though the kitchen was fine, just minor issues. Upstairs the shower worked fine, but leaks from under the shower box. The cottage is well presented and a comfortable spot to call home for a week. The wifi isn't great, but the whole area has poor signal issues. However, Netflix streamed perfectly well, which was great. The neighbours either side are lovely and friendly. Car park spaces are narrow, presumably designed when cars were slimmer, but that's only a minor issue.

We had a lovely stay, the weather was good to us which helped.
Phil gave us a good introduction to the area and made several recommendations. We enjoyed sitting in the garden and meeting the Peacock. Felt very private too. The hot tub was lovely. No issues with the lid, I managed it each time on my own. The main bedroom was very comfortable, huge bed clean and fresh. Nice shower too. We ate at the property each of the three nights we were there, on the first night we had been shopping but forgot salt for cooking , a lot of rental properties Iâve stayed in have some basics for guests. It wasnât an issue as we got some the next day. The local area is beautiful and Phil recommended a nice walk. Only negatives were two of the wine glasses were quite dirty, probably put back by previous guests and not checked.
