What our customers say about their holidays

I rented Roa Island House to host a women's wellness retreat weekend.
It was perfect. It's a HUGE house with plenty of space and comfortable furniture to relax in. The breakfast room that links to the kitchen and utility room is a fantastic space with it's own fridge and dishwasher which enabled us to keep the kitchen as our Chef's domain and allow the breakfast room for guests to access freely when getting hot or cold drinks. There's loads of storage space in the utility room too which was very helpful. The living spaces are large, comfortable and well lit, and the conservatory is a real sun trap. The bedrooms are all a good size and the beds are really comfortable - between them and the peace of the island, everybody slept really soundly. The tower room is a real treat to watch the sunset from, and there is access from the front door to three ways down to the beach (one east facing, one south and one west) in less than a minute if you like to watch the sun rise and set. We also really enjoyed the garden, sauna and hot tub, and the large selection of benches were well used across the weekend! My negatives are all very minor. It's not as pristine as some houses in terms of decor, but it is a very old building! Most of the house was spotless, but unfortunately my first impression when I walked in was that the hallway floor was a bit gritty (there may have been a workman in after the cleaners though?), but there was a "guests cleaning cupboard" with a mop and a broom, so I was able to sort this out before my guests arrived. Also, the vast majority of the glassware is plastic, which I completely understand from a breakages and safety point of view, particularly if being used outside or around the hot tub, but it would have been nice to have glass options as well for drinks being consumed in the house. Finally, and also a symptom of an older building, there are not many plug sockets in the bedrooms, and the ones there are are not always in very convenient places. An extension tower has been put in the main living room, but if you need to use your phone as an alarm, it's worth charging it up before bed rather than overnight! Overall, the house provided an excellent home for us all for the weekend and I was very happy with my choice of venue. I would return here without hesitation, it's a really lovely spot.

This property has huge potential and overall as we made do with what we had we were happy with our stay.
However unfortunately there were a number of issues which arenât really acceptable in a stay of this size. 1. Firstly the cooker was out of action. We were given small electric conductors which kept cutting out and simply didnât provide enough heat for the large pots we were trying to cook in (25+ people). The camping gas conductors were an improvement but the 4 gas canisters finished in no time. The engineer was unable to fix the cooker even though we were told it would be fixed on the third day. 2. The boiler was not working on arrival. The downstairs and 2 bathrooms upstairs did not have hot water. People shared bathrooms in the first night but this was inconvenient. 3. After the plumber came to fix the boiler we still had no use of the thermostat to put the heating on. It was cold for August with a storm most evenings. Despite being told the electrician would come we heard nothing for the rest of the stay. 4. Unfortunately certain parts of the house were not properly cleaned on arrival I.e downstairs bathrooms. 5. The conservatory room started leaking on our final night. Albeit there was a pretty bad storm but it did leave a large puddle in the morning. 6. The shower pressure in most bathrooms was poor and also the bathtub in many didnât drain quick enough. 7. There wasnât enough toilet roll for the number of bathrooms/guests. These were the main issues. In reality we think we should be compensated c.10% of our costs for these problems.

We had a lovely time at Cartmel lodge.
The lodge is situated beautifully, surrounded by trees and bushes. It's so quiet and you can enjoy watching the squirrels jumping between trees whilst relaxing in the hot tub. Inside the lodge is big and open and feels very homely, the kitchen has all the utensils you need and a great big fridge freezer too. The central heating is great also and warns the place up in no time! Ensuite shower was brilliant although the bath in the family room is quite small. I marked the lodge down on a few things. When arriving after a long drive and as it was cold we would have liked to use the log burner straight away but we couldn't as there were no logs left for us. There was no information as to where you get the logs so we had to travel out to find some from a supermarket. I thought this was a little poor. Also as we visited during autum the wooden steps and decking area was extremely slippy l and led to a family member slipping down the entrance steps and hurting themselves, luckily nothing too serious but when I messaged the owner I had no reply. The steps could do with some anti slip strips placing on them. The same goes for the decking to the rear, I slipped and one of the decking planks shifted next to the hot tub causing me to land on my knees. Again could be easily rectified. All in all a great week away and we would be happy to return.

What a marvellous manor house!
From the moment we entered the gates, we felt like we were in a truly royal place. Our group of 16 had an incredible time here. The house was immaculate, spacious, and beautifully decorated throughout. The well-equipped kitchen made it easy to prepare meals for our group, and the luxurious bedrooms and bathrooms made us feel like we were staying in a five-star hotel. The grand staircase, chandeliers, lounges, and dining room added a royal touch to the experience. The location was fantastic, closer to tourist destinations in the Lake District than we expected, with easy access to Keswick, Maryport, and Whitehaven. The town centre was only a short walk away, and we found plenty of great pubs and takeaways nearby (Double Happiness Chinese takeaway was our favourite!). We loved the on-site facilities like the games room and hot tub, though we couldnât enjoy the garden due to rain. The hosts were incredibly helpful and responsive, and the security deposit and check-in process were seamless and straightforward. The only downside was that the broadband occasionally slowed down during peak hours, especially when streaming, but this was a minor inconvenience. We already miss the place and are planning our next visit! Highly recommended for anyone looking for a relaxing, luxurious, and memorable getaway.

Really lovely weekend, couldnât be happier!
Booked as a surprise for my partner for his birthday and he was extremely pleasantly surprised. Hot tub was spacious, clean and a perfect place to sit on a chilly night and star gaze. With no light pollution, we had never seen so many and it made for a perfect evening, or two! Kitchen had 99% of things needed to make any meal and what it didnât have you could get by with so no drama cooking big scrumptious meals instead of eating out. And the dish washer made the experience a pleasure relaxing together afterwards instead of standing over a sink for 40 minutes. Bed spacious and comfortable. I took some spare loo roll and we needed it by the second day. There was a small amount of tea and coffee, hot chocolate, and sugars so the local shop was ideal for stocking up on bits needed. I did an online shop and had it delivered right to the door of the lodge with was perfect. Kevin on site is very kind and will visit you to say hi and give you his number for wood deliveries for the log burner. The owner is very helpful and replied to my few queries with haste. Overall, amazing weekend, very comfortable, very relaxing and would 100% book this lodge for our next weekend away. Thank you to all that helped me organise it and then helped us enjoy it.
