What our customers say about their holidays

The cottage is cozy and comfortable but the real selling point at Riverside cottage is the fantastic outdoor space, wildlife, and scenery.
Itâs a little slice of heaven- stunning. We took our 2 dogs, both high energy dogs who love to be outdoors. One has no recall and can usually only be walked on a lead. The cottage has a really big, beautifully maintained, enclosed garden which isnât shared with any of the other cottages. But more importantly, it has a lovely big field/meadow area adjoining it with safe banks down to the river. The field is part of the estate and fully enclosed, other than a gate at the far end (you just need to check itâs been closed before letting your dogs off as there are sheep further down the track). All 4 cottages have access to the field/river but we didnât see a single other person using it all week. Was such a luxury to have it to ourselves. Our dogs (and myself and my husband) had a fantastic time in the water in the sunshine. Absolutely made our holiday being to be able to let the dogs have the run of the field for hours. Theyâve never slept so well. A personal highlight for me was seeing the kingfisher on the river. We saw them every day while sat, enjoying breakfast on the table in the garden. Every direction you look from the cottage garden is beautiful scenery. Mountains with red kite gliding above them , the river and woodland with birds galore, fish jumping out of the water, ornate chimney tops, and the colourful boarders in the garden. Owners were very friendly and welcoming. Not intrusive in the slightest. The kitchen is very compact but perfectly big enough for me and my husband. You might struggle with 5 guests though. I couldnât help but think the large shower room would be better utilised as a kitchen and the kitchen as a compact bathroom. My only very slight gripes were that the windows could have done with a more recent clean (spiderwebs in abundance) and the little yard area off the kitchen could have been spruced up a bit. Also, had the adjoining cottage (Gardenerâs Cottage)been occupied, I would have been concerned about privacy as there is only a locked internal door separating the two cottages and I think sounds may travel. We were, however, lucky enough to have the other cottage vacant during our stay. I really wouldnât let this put you off though. With the outdoor space and surrounding scenery, youâll spend most of your time enjoying outdoors. On the whole, the place was spotlessly clean, no trace of dogs. Shower was great. We had a fantastic time and we would absolutely love to come back.

We booked one or two holidays a year with Sykes over many years and, until now, have never been disappointed.
This property was rated 4 ticks but offered little to justify that rating. The issues were: ⢠Cottage for six people has a tiny domestic fridge and a freezer compartment that was filled when we put a pack of ice in it; ⢠The double doors to the garden did not close or secure properly; ⢠Cutlery and crockery did not match; ⢠No washing machine and no dishwasher; ⢠Too many negative notices on walls and warning letters - one of them even began "Please comply with the following". Seriously, is that the way you would greet a guest. Things can be put into a positive statement; ⢠Tracks into and around the property were worn into deep ruts and bumps that caused cars to ground; ⢠Minimum of provision, eg six of each item of cutlery (eat breakfast and wash up for lunch and then for dinner; don't have a separate knife, fork or spoon for serving food). Just not generous as we experience from 4 tick properties elsewhere with Sykes; ⢠One tiny tea towel; ⢠Creaky floors; ⢠No light over the cooker (did not work) nor any light over the prep side of the kitchen; ⢠Slats on one of the beds were loose and allowed one to slip through when sitting on the bed; ⢠We understood why there would be nobody on reception (notices indicated that they would be there infrequently) but why not at least have someone around at check in time? ⢠No welcome pack (very rare in most properties and unique in our experience of Sykes); ⢠Cheap glassware All in all, this has damaged our confidence in Sykes. Next year, I will not say, as I usually do to our family when I book, "We don't need to worry, its a Sykes Cottage" Positives: Cleanliness, pleasant interior, good wi fi, hot tub, amazing view and secluded garden.

The location of the cottage is great, as many of the places we visited were either a short drive away like Elan Valley, or just over an hour away like Aberdovey.
Also, a short drive away, we enjoyed a lovely meal at The Lamb & Flag pub. The cottage itself was disappointing and mainly due to the noise of the family using the property next door. It doesn't work as two rentals as essentially it's one property split into two rentals meaning it sounds like the other people are in your side of the property with only an internal door upstairs and downstairs, separating the property area. The main bedroom and landing were the worst, scaring my daughter, waking us up late at night or early in the morning, not helped by the fact the family next door were running up & down the stairs, jumping off the landing and shouting. In addition, Riverside Cottage has the back garden and the next property has the front garden. Riverside Cottage has a lovely garden, but the next door rentals kitchen looks out onto, so no privacy! Upon arriving, we were told to park our car in the small car park area, however the family staying next door, who arrived after us, parked both of their cars outside the two properties, blocking our exit & entrance to the property. So if you're looking for a relaxing week, I would only recommend Riverside Cottage if there is nobody using next door. The kitchen is on the small side but managable, but all of the cupboards are already used up with kitchenware, so for the week, we had to leave our food items in the bags we'd brought them in as there was nowhere to store them. It's also a shame that there is no washing machine. For a weeks stay as a family of 4, visiting places getting wet/muddy/sandy etc, clothes needed washing. I think this property is more a long weekend property and not meant for a weeks stay, especially for families.

Rhayder is a very pretty area.
The view from the cabin was beautiful. It's just ashame about the cabin itself... The cabin Is a nice 3 bedroom size and comfortably sleeps 6, there's a good size bathroom with separate shower and bath which is handy for families with younger and older children. Kitchen is OK but the extractor fan has no light and light covers missing, also very few cooking utensils. Beds were comfortable but most have loose or broken slats. The back door only has a slide latch type lock. The decking at the back has several rotten boards so be careful where you stand. The hot tub has broken jets, no headrests, ripped and broken lid which has to be lifted off by hand as the handle is broken. The owners of the campsite allowed workmen to paint the outside of the cabin with some kind of varnish while we had popped out one day without asking our permission. We came back to the entire cabin smelling awful and wet patches still around the windows and doors so opening windows didnt even help clear the smell and we had to keep our younger ones away from the decking area. We didn't get apology. One thing they did manage was to send a polite girl to change the toaster when the one we had blew all the electrics one morning at the beginning of the week. Generally I would say look else where we won't be going back

Never been to wales before , daughter wanted to go .
She found the lodges online and we booked. When we got there the lodge was lovely , very clean and felt homely . Lovely view too. Comfortable beds. Well equipped. We came home a day earlier than booked. from the whole holiday we only have one concern. Reception wasnât manned , just a tiny room with a bench to collect key envelope , it said if we needed to speak to anyone there was a phone number on the wall and a door bell to ring for attention . I had called a few times as we had asked before we went if they had a DVD player in the lodge and was told he would get someone to put one in for when we arrived .there wasnât one . No answer on the phone so we went out the next day to buy one , nowhere had any . We tried the bell on the way back but got no reply . So decided to telephone again once we were back in the lodge . Still no answer . On Monday night the electric went off , tried ringing 7 times but it just buzzed once then cut off . Hubby looked outside for the electric box but couldnât find it . found the electric box eventually in the kitchen unit and got it back on . We left trip advisor review as we would recommend it , but think the customer service could do with improving while they have guests on site.
