Dog Friendly Ulverston Holiday Cottages

A lively market town in Cumbria on Morecambe Bay, Ulverston has a rich architectural heritage spread out on winding cobbled streets. The birthplace of comedian Stan Laurel, it's also where the Cumbria Way, a 73-mile walk through stunning landscapes, begins. Ulverston received its Royal Charter in 1280, and this event is celebrated annually in September with the Charter Festival. Thanks to its canal, Ulverston is rich in maritime history and visitors will want to experience the panoramic views from its famous Hoad Monument or explore the Lake District.

At Dog Friendly Cottages, we believe your canine companion should be a part of your exciting holiday adventures, which is why we specialise in dog-friendly cottages in Ulverston. Are you searching for a family-friendly barn conversion with inspiring water views? Maybe a romantic hideaway with a fire pit and a bubbling hot tub is more your style. Whether you want a cosy cottage with period charm or a modern retreat that's sleek and contemporary, you'll find a tempting selection with us.

Our dog-friendly Ulverston holiday cottages are in carefully chosen locations so you can make the most of the Lake District. From boating on Lake Windermere to visiting the Laurel & Hardy Museum, there's something for every kind of visitor.

What our customers say about their holidays

  • Ben - Verified booking

This is a truly stunning property which provided the corner stone to a lovely family holiday in the Lakes.

Prior to arrival, communications from our host were prompt and thorough ensuring a smooth check in process. Being a young family with a toddler, we were given the option of a cot and high-chair but did not decide to pursue this (although it did provide peace of mind knowing these were available should we need them). Even though there are a few miles of single track roads and narrow passes to access the property, it is worth it to have the privilege of the wonderful rural views from your window. There is a parking area outside the three properties which provides ample room for three large vehicles: an electric charging port was available but we didn't need this. The property itself is immaculate! Upon entry, we were immediately presented with that 'new house smell' as the property was clinically clean. However, this does not detract from the home comforts such as the comfortable beds, fully equipped kitchen, modern bathroom, fully functioning wi-fi, smart tv and duck/bee themed home furnishings which immediately make you feel warmed and welcomed. Ironically, this warming does not extend to the bath/shower as hot water does run out quickly so most of our baths/showers were lukewarm (but this was appreciated as our stay was during a heatwave). Overall, the property was ideal for us being a young family of three: the whole property is on one floor so there is no fear of 'wandering toddlers' coming to any harm and the bedroom setup (one double in one room and two twin beds in the other room) ensured that there was plenty of space. Our favourite features had to be the high-rise ceiling in the living room - a reminder that this is barn conversion (you wouldn't know otherwise) and the outdoor table and chairs which enabled my wife and I to enjoy the stunning scenery with a glass of wine at the end of a busy day. Being a young family, most of our visits started from Lakeside (15 minute drive) which hosts the aquarium, steam railway and ferry terminal all on the same site - the last of which is a nice easy way to reach more populated areas such as Ambleside and Bowness if you fancy an alternate method of transport. It is also worth mentioning that next to a welcome pack of light refreshments and a cleaning kit, there was a clear and thorough 'home guide' which provided all the information needed to operate appliances, dispose of rubbish and plan an agenda for each day. Overall, we had a phenomenal stay and would unreservedly recommend Bill's Barn: it is clear that our hosts have put their all into this beautiful property and always put the needs and interests of their guests to the fore. It was a privilege to have stayed here and we will certainly be returning!

We stayed at Stone Cross Mansions for a week in the Alice suite with our children and dog.

The apartments are brand new and I believe that we were some of the first people to stay since they were taken over by Jerry, Louise and Mike. The apartment was immaculately clean, beautifully furnished with elegant styling, very comfortable beds and thoughtful touches. When you're staying somewhere for a week, it is very helpful to have essential basics, such as binliners and loo paper, provided. There were even some treats for the dog as part of the welcome provisions. The apartments are very close to an Aldi and an M&S for supplies and within an easy walk to Ulverston Town Centre where there are some excellent restaurants - Poppy's cafe for a Full English (including veggi version) was great. The apartment was also a good spot to travel to the various lakes from, with an hour or so drive to Keswick. The lower part of Lake Windermere is only 20 minutes drive. The booking process with Syke was straightforward and the hosts were lovely and very helpful when needed. We would definitely stay again and wish the family every success with their venture. A lovely temporary home from which to see some of the most beautiful landscapes in England. Sam & family.

Our 4th stay and there's a reason why we keep coming back.

it was as spotlessly clean, welcoming and comfortable as ever. The weather wasn't great so we did spend a few days just relaxing at the cottage and it's a lovely environment in which to relax. Ulverston is a warm and friendly place and Hawthorn is an ideal spot to wander down to the shops and pubs or down to the estuary which is beautiful. Welcome pack is lovely when you are in need of a cuppa when you arrive. Every room is welcoming and the cottage is endearing. We usually sit and enjoy the view but Summer and rain makes things grow so sadly the view at the rear wasn't as good as in Winter. Hairdryer, towels, kitchen utensils etc all good quality and as stated previously everything is impeccably clean. The owner clearly maintains the cottage as we noticed little tweaks to make sure everything is of a good standard. Freshly painted walls, new kitchen chairs, new bbq, new tv, cushions etc since our last visit. We love the furniture too. It's very classy and understated. It's clearly a well loved property with a very friendly and courteous caretaker and owner. . If you've never booked Hawthorn I wouldn't hesitate.

This property is in a fantastic location for both getting out and about and just wandering into town.

The kitchen was well appointed and the bath was gorgeous, we both enjoyed a good soak while we were there. The tea and coffee left out for us on arrival was really appreciated and good coffee too (we went into town and bought some for ourselves before we left). There is no specific parking space, but we had no trouble parking the car just up the road in a convenient place. Getting into the cottage on the first day was easy and the instructions for use and leaving of the keys were clear as was the various leaflets and maps for things to do. I would highly recommend this place and a trip into the local town. The shop which sells the coffee has a space upstairs to eat in and the food and drink were delicious. The local pub just on the corner was also excellent and being so close is within walking distance so you can have an extra drink without worrying about driving home. We had a truly lovely week and I fully recommend this to anyone.

    Everything was very new.

We don’t think we had a microwave or if we did it was integrated in something which we could not find- seems a bit of an oversight. Possibly could have done with six mugs as well as the cups provided but overall well appointed. We were only cooking for 4 but my wife said there might not be a pan big enough to cook a casserole for 6. WiFi worked well in the bedrooms but kept dropping out in the lounge. Lovely TV. We were closer to Ulverston centre than we realised and having found the way through to the side gate on to the road enjoyed walking down into town for a meal or a drink. Overall we had a very relaxing and happy stay.
