The name mean ’Village of Gardens’ in Cornish and is a beautiful setting, small bridges cross over the streams and the gardeners keep the grounds to a high standard. You feel that you are in the middle of a tranquil secluded area with the abundance of trees and plants. Ideal for breaks throughout the year and due to the mild climate there is always plenty to do.

The facilities on site are great for families. There is a children’s play area outside and for very young ones, there is a ball pool and soft play area inside. The tennis courts are open all year, pop to reception to get the access code. If you’re feeling energetic there is a gym on site. Near the reception you will find a cafe/bar open from April to end of October (check at reception for opening times). The laundrette is behind the café with coin operated washing machines and tumble dryers.

This part of Cornwall has an abundance of beautiful beaches, National Trust properties and gardens. Cornwall is known for its amazing beaches. The closest beaches are Swanpool and Maenporth just 1 mile away. Gyllyngvase is the largest in Falmouth just a short drive away. It is a sandy flat beach with parking nearby. There is a Gylly Beach Cafe on the beach, where you can choose from a hot chocolate, a snack or try the locally sourced mains.

An ideal base to explore the area and for gardening enthusiasts, Trebah and Glendurgan are close by. Falmouth town is 5 minutes’ drive away where you can explore the Maritime Museum, wander the cobbled street looking at the local shops, great for gifts and souvenirs. There is a wide variety of restaurants, cafes and bars to choose from. Why not pick up some fish and chips and eat them at the harbour looking at the boats. There is usually a large ship that has come in for repairs and you may even see a cruise ship as this is a popular stop off for them.

For walkers you will be spoilt by the choice of coast walks to admire the wildlife and enjoy the fresh air. Why not wander around Pendennis Castle? It was an artillery fort constructed by Henry V111 and you can walk around the moat, stop for an ice cream and admire the view. It is now in the care of English Heritage and open to the public. If you want to surf then Porthleven is a good choice, a beautiful small harbour with its own beach, restaurants, pubs and cafes. Great for a day out or night out, it is 30 minutes away. Why not take the younger ones to the harbour to catch crabs, or let the older ones play in the water!

Our trip to Falmouth was to catch up with friends and Gull Cottage, located in Pendra Loweth was a 5 min drive to our friends home. Gull cottage definitely suited our needs beyond location, offering a quiet, tranquil base to rest up between visits and site seeing trips around Cornwall. We hope to rebook Gull Cottage again before we finish this trip to the UK.

Upon arrival we were greeted by an alarm sounding that we tracked down to the freezer. This appeared to the the fact that the door wasn't correctly shut but this would not close, as one of the drawers wouldn't fully close as it required defrosting. We have to take the drawer out in order to shut the door correctly. Despite this the alarm kept going off several times during the day and at night. Since we visited last year the cottage was no where near as clean with list of stains on carpets on dining room chairs, placemats. Both bathrooms needed a deep clean as both smelled quite bad of stale urine. The bathroom light still doesn't work properly as this didn't work last year, along with the rear patio light and main living room light. We had to wash the kitchen sides down and quite alot of the kitchen equipment before we could use it. We also had to sweep the patio and porch as they were both covered with leaves. All beds are uncomfortable and squeak and need replacing. There was also dirty underwear left in the children's bunk bedroom that hadn't been removed by the cleaners at changeover. The windows and mirros and finger marks and handprints all over them from a child and hadn't been cleaned for a long time. There were dust and cobwebs in several places. This was our 2nd visit to Gull Cottage but this has put us off for a 3rd time. This is a shame because with a few basic tweaks this could be a really good cottage. It also seems to be one of the few cottages that doesn't have a bbq. On the outside grass area at the rear of the cottage there was lots of dog waste while this may not be down to this cottage it restricts the use of outside, especially with young children. If we had confidence everything was rectified we would not hesitate to revisit.
