Tollgate Cottage is a charming and well-equipped holiday home, praised for its cleanliness, comfort, and excellent access to beautiful walks, nature reserves, and local attractions. Guests appreciate the enclosed garden, dog-friendly features, and proximity to a welcoming pub. While the cottage offers lovely views and a cosy atmosphere, several guests note that its location next to the busy A12 can result in noticeable traffic noise, particularly in the garden and front rooms. Overall, visitors enjoy their stay and many express a desire to return.
The majority of reviews highlight the cottage as very clean and well-presented, with several guests specifically mentioning spotless interiors and well-maintained facilities. A small number of comments mention minor issues such as dirty curtains, but these are exceptions.
The location is praised for its proximity to nature walks, the estuary, and local attractions, as well as the convenience of a nearby pub. However, the cottage's position directly next to the A12 is frequently mentioned, with some guests finding the road noise intrusive, especially in the garden and front-facing rooms.
Guests generally find the cottage comfortable, warm, and cosy, with good beds and a relaxing lounge. Some mention minor issues such as single beds needing replacement and noise affecting sleep in rooms closest to the road, but overall comfort is rated highly.
The cottage is described as well-equipped, with everything needed for a pleasant stay. Some guests note maintenance issues such as garden furniture needing replacement, minor repairs, and a lack of instructions for appliances, but these do not detract significantly from the overall experience.
Many guests appreciate thoughtful touches such as welcome packs, gifts for both guests and dogs, and a well-stocked kitchen. Please note that such gifts are not guaranteed for every stay.

It is tucked away alongside the A12 which runs the length of the Suffolk Heritage Coast making it the ideal spot for those wishing to explore this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In the village you will find a popular pub and walks including those by the famous church. The legend of the Black Shuck, a ghostly black dog, dates back to 1577 and has been immortalised in songs and folk legend. The church itself is an incredible structure, overlooking the Blyth Valley.
Public transport is superb here and you can get into the ever popular Southwold to enjoy all the quintessential town has to offer with ease. From its independent shops, brightly coloured beach huts and traditional pier, it’s easy to see why this coastal town is a holiday hot spot all year round. Walberswick is also an excellent must see during your visit. Crabbing here is the sport of choice and it will keep kids entertained all day. All you need is a line, a bucket and bacon (we hear smoked bacon is the preferred kind!).
This is also a dog friendly area with endless woodland and beach walks. A trip to Dunwich and the woods are highly recommended. With a much needed pub at the end of the route this is a destination ideal for both summer and winter getaways. RSPB Minsmere is also close by with incredible sighting of rare species reported by birdwatchers. Beach 3 miles. Shop 2 miles, pub and restaurant 50 yards.

We really liked the cottage but directly behind the garden fence was the very noisy and busy A12 which sounded like a motor way. It had a good enclosed garden but we couldn’t enjoy or even attempt to sit out because of the terrible noisy traffic. But everything else was excellent including lovely view from windows on the other side of the cottage.

Cottage lovely, area superb, the A12 not perfect but we seemed to get used to it, definitely considering a return.
