Dog Friendly Cottages In Aviemore

Aviemore lies at the heart of the Highlands of Scotland, set in the Cairngorms National Park. Sitting in the shadow of the 1,245m-high Cairn Gorm Mountain, it's a busy town, perfect for people looking for an active and outdoorsy break in the Scottish Highlands.

Located just 30 miles south of Inverness, Aviemore is easily accessible and makes the ideal base for anyone who wants to immerse themselves in the magical mountains, get lost in the ancient forests, and go on dog walks to explore the lochs and landscapes of the national park. Enjoy a pub lunch in front of the roaring fire at The Old Bridge Inn or learn all about the local brew at Cairngorm Brewery.

Geared up to outdoorsy fun, Aviemore is the perfect spot for a dog-friendly break; and there are lots of places with enclosed gardens you can stay with your four-legged friend. Whether you fancy a quaint cottage in the middle of town or a charming log cabin with a hot tub out in the sticks, there's something for everyone no matter your taste or budget.

Things to do in Aviemore with dogs

With an abundance of walking trails, dog-friendly attractions and welcoming pubs and cafes, there's plenty to do in and around Aviemore - and Fido can come too!

1. Landmark Forest Adventure Park

Best for: Family fun

Located in Carrbridge, just outside Aviemore, Landmark Forest Adventure Park is a great day-out for the whole family; Fido too! There's a butterfly house, rollercoaster, play park and tree-top trail, as well as a restaurant and shop. Dogs on leads are welcome in the park and will enjoy walking routes like the Red Squirrel Nature Trail (keep an eye out for the rare rodents!)

2. Cairngorm Mountain

Best for: Climbing challenge

You can't come to Aviemore and not get out and about to explore the National Park. If you and Fido fancy a challenge, you could take on the 11km walk climbing 775m up Cairngorm Mountain. You'll have to take on the hike if you want to enjoy the views and breathe in the fresh air atop the summit beside your canine chum as dogs are not allowed on the funicular.

3. Strathspey Steam Railway

Best for: Sightseeing in style

Take in the sights from the comfort of a steam train on the Strathspey Steam Railway, setting off from Aviemore and chugging to Boat of Garten. The 10-mile restored section of the original Highland Railway Line reopened in 1978. Dogs are welcome on the trains but must stay on the floor.

4. Loch An Eilein Castle

Best for: Stepping back in time

Loch An Eilein Castle - Gaelic for 'Loch of the Island ' - is perched on an isle that juts out of the tranquil water of the shimmering water. The 13th century castle is hidden deep in the forest of Rothiemurchus, surrounded by ancient pine trees. Dogs are welcome but owners are asked to keep them on the lead.

5. Glenmore

Best for: Getting lost in the forest

Glenmore Forest Park is a nature reserve made up of ancient woodland and beautiful lochs. Follow a trail winding through the trees or head to Scotland's only freshwater beach, Loch Morlich beach, famous for being the highest beach in Britain for a paddle or game of fetch. The park is pet-friendly and dogs are welcome on all areas of the beach.

What our customers say about their holidays

  • Katie - Verified booking

We had a brilliant week in Aviemore, the location of our little chalet was perfect, 5 min walk to the town, peaceful, beautiful garden and a great pub along the street - The Old Bridge Inn.

We couldn't have picked a better place for the location. The chalet was a great base, we went to Loch Ness, Glenmore Forest, Cairngorm Mountain, Carrbridge, Ardverikie Estate, Castle Roy and had a lovely walk around Rothiemurchus on our last day. The chalet was comfortable, the bedroom was huge and the bed was comfy. Good storage with lots of drawers and wardrobe space. The kitchen was well equipped and had everything we needed although we only really cooked breakfast there. The kitchen cupboards and cutlery drawer need a clean though and old mugs with chips need removing. The shower was good but difficult to set the temperature, there's a knack to it. Wi-Fi was really poor, neither us could stay connected for long so we ended up turning it off, it didn't bother us much as we had 4g but worth bearing in mind that it could be difficult for planning walks/downloading maps if you are relying on the Wi-Fi. The balcony was great, our dog loved sitting out at night but I'm glad he didn't see the chickens and rabbits in the garden every morning! The chalet could do with some modernisation and although it was clean, the light fittings could do with a deep clean, cobwebs around the windows and the kitchen cupboards. They're the kind of things you ignore in your own house until you get around to it so it didn't really bother us. Small improvements such as hand soap and a guest book (I like to see where others have visited and travelled from) would be welcomed. Communication with the host was really easy, her Dad lives next door and is a really amiable, friendly man as well. Overall we had a brilliant week, we were lucky with the weather and would definitely stay here again when we return to Aviemore. A great little find in a stunning part of Scotland.

The house on paper was exactly what we were looking for unfortunately it came up well short.

Positives: Location in the Cairngorms is excellent, bedrooms comfortable and was nice to sleep in in-between the trucks going past. Good on-suites to the bedrooms, showers are nice and powerful. Negatives: The road noise outside it dreadful, trucks and cars go past the house morning, noon and night, one after another with the combination of the railway only slightly further on its not a peaceful night sleep. Aviemore has two access roads to the A9 anyone going north goes past the house. Downstairs each room only has a single ceiling light which has a Edison bulb with copper shade, it may look nice but its very dark and the light emitted is very orange. To do any cooking at night you have to move the 2 LED lounge lamps in the kitchen so you can see what you are doing. The carpet was not attached to its carpet runner at the top of the stairs and it slipped as I going down the stairs and I landed on my backside; not a great start to the holiday! The house was cold when we arrived, manually turning the heating on in the garage brought the boiler to life but no heat. Each room has its own thermostat we turned these up high and still no heat. In the end despite travelling 550 miles to get there we decided to go and get some fire wood and matches for the lounge wood burner as none is provided. This helped but is also broke. The air closer vent to slow the burning down doesn't seem to do anything so we get a roaring fire going very quickly but it burns through the wood within minutes. In the end we decided to leave early, very disappointing.

The house itself is spacious and a good location for walking to the shops for a browse.

Regarding comments about the road noise, the noise from the adjacent main road can be heard from upstairs & downstairs bedrooms, but it didn't bother us. The one thing I had to go and buy was a hairdryer as there wasn't one provided. A tip for the cleaners - take out the sponge filters from the hoover and wash through every month or so to stop the hoover from smelling dirty. Peg on the washing line and dry before replacing and using the hoover again. In the information pack it just states refuse collected on Wednesday. Had to look on The Highlands Council web site to see whether it was for general waste or recycling. Found it was general waste during our stay, so placed bin out on night before and it wasn't collected. The bin was already half full of waste from previous renters. We contacted the council to make them aware that it hadn't been collected. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would hope to return again sometime in the future.

This is a fantastic alpine style lodge in the heart of Aviemore.

There is very easy access to all the amenities Aviemore has to offer and we were never far away from something to do, Rothiemurchus being virtually on our doorstep and the skiing 20 minutes up the road. For walkers there are plenty of routes for all abilities, be those easy strolls around Loch Morlich or for the hardcore, Cairngorm itself. For the scotch drinker the surrounding towns and villages are a mecca, with so many famous distilleries being fed by the Spey river. Everything is easily accesible and well serviced by road (except when the snow gates are closed!). We also took the train and spent a day in and around Inverness, and found the service to be very reliable. All in all we had a fantastic week, doing good things, in a beautiful place with friendly people. What's not to make us come back again?

The accommodation was lovely, well situated for the event we were there for (Thunder in the Glens) and already booked for next year.

The shared garden was lovely and the gate at the bottom which lead to a bridge over the burn, into a meadow and then through some trees to the banks of the Spey was a favourite of my two dogs who joined me for the latter part of the booking after the rest of the party had headed home. The big doors to outside from the family room were stuck, probably swollen from the amount of rain in the area this summer but that was a minor inconvenience which we didn't bother the owners with, other than that the accommodation was near perfect, the one thing that was missing for pet owners I think was a fenced off area for the dogs to sit outside (mine are still puppyish so a secure area would have been welcomed), that secure are under the upper veranda would have made the near in 'near perfect disappear'.
