What our customers say about their holidays

Although Cloam Cottage is perfectly placed in Port Isaac there are a few problems - some can be dealt with, some cannot.
There were only two of us and it felt cramped in the living room - I don't see how 4 people would fare there. The seagull-proof large black bin bag took several emails, and one personal visit before it arrived on day 6. not nice having a bin bag full of rubbish sitting in the kitchen. The owners clearly don't care about its visitors as there are no instructions for anything and no 'help' booklet - usually provided in rental properties. A larger TV would be much appreciated as the one currently in situ is not much bigger than a laptop. The kitchen really needs a little TLC - broken cupboards, broken salad drawer in small fridge - easy to cut your hand on. We could also not find anywhere - other than the tiny fridge - to put our own food. On arrival - late Saturday afternoon - we found half a toilet roll in the downstairs shower room - surely a pack of 4 is not beyond the wit of man! All these problems are easy to remedy. those that are. not are: the stairs are very steep and quite dangerous - there should be a warning for old and very young prospective guests; the noise from the pubs' fan is loud, so having the windows or door open is almost impossible. The lack of an outside space means that if the weather is bad, you will be stuck in a very small internal living room - the photos on the website make it look far bigger than it is. Also the view from the living room, and indeed the two bedrooms, is the brick wall of the pub, only feet away - no sea view here! The only thing to be done about these problems is to highlight them on the website. Positive points, location near to the harbour, the designated parking space at the Old School House, two bedrooms are good, although the one with the double bed has no space to get around the bed, so not really suitable for older people. Having said this, Port Isaac is lovely and near to many great places to visit. I will go back to the village, just not in this cottage.

Absolutely perfect!
We booked Barley Crush for a quiet getaway with our 2 dogs. We were not disappointed. The barn conversion was beautiful both inside and out, renovated to a high standard but kept beautifully traditional. The furnishings are good quality, tasteful and above all else very comfortable. The accommodation was surprisingly spacious, the pictures do not do it justice. It was warm and toasty on arrival, plentiful hot water and free logs for the woodburner. The kitchen is well eauipped. There is everything you could possibly want or need for a home from home stay. Many properties âallowâ dogs but few offer the welcome that this one does, towels, bowls, and even a lovely comfy dog bed provided!! The girls were delighted. The outside space is secure for all but the most determined escapees, pretty but natural and a wonderful place to sit with a morning coffee whilst listening to the birdsong, or with an evening glass of wine watching the sunset, and if you are lucky enough to have clear skies the stars are abundant and bright. Claudia was lovely to chat to, not at all intrusive, and lives nearby should you need anything. We and our dogs enjoyed walks directly from the door though fields and ancient woodland, along the river and up over the beautiful rugged Bodmin moor. If you are looking for a peaceful tranquil haven that is right off the beaten track but within easy driving distance of the beaches and busier attractions that this amazing county has to offer, you will love Barley Crush. We have stayed in many locations on and around Bodmin moor, and this is one of our favourites. We will definitely be back.

On entering the cottage it was clear someone had been to clean due to wet floors, however the cottage was in need of a good clean, kitchen, light switches and the tv remote was especially grotty.
The freezer door was broken and hanging on, a few minutes after entering the property two members of staff knocked the door and entered to see if housekeeping had been. They took photos of the broken freezer door and said they would sort this. Despite us just doing a shop which included some frozen foods, no repairs was undertaken whilst we were at the cottage and we couldnât store further frozen foods during our stay. The vent across the round was so loud and several nights went on until 11.30pm, this was highlighted in the booking, but this went on for much longer than expected. The bins scenario was poorly communicated, no extra liners provided or outside seagull proof bags provided. We had to take our rubbish home to dispose of. The accommodation to the right of the cottage was housing several younger people during the week, 1st through to 4th night they were so loud after midnight, drunk in the roads, shouting and on the second night climbing up into the bedroom windows from the outside, it totally ruined our stay. They kept the children awake 4 nights running. My husband 3 times went out and asked them to calm down. I feel seriously saddened about our stay here. So much so we cut our weeks holiday short and left on Wednesday.

The cottage is centrally located in Port Isaac, beds were clean & comfy, linen good quality, bathrooms clean & the nearby parking space was invaluable.
The cottage is lovely but sadly neglected, had it been the odd issue we would have ignored this. However the staff, especially Jenny at John Bray were extremely professional, helpful & responsive Other reviews from March mention dirty windows & doors, they were dreadful covered in grime & although a window cleaner was arranged, the delay meant we had to clean them ourselves. It would be hoped that the window cleaner is now a regular arrangement We also found many items including a pair of shoes under the sofa & dirty tissues under the bed With the exception of the washer dryer, the rest of the appliances, utensils & crockery were either rusty, mouldy or broken. The owner & agency did however arrange for the cooker to be replaced, some wine glasses & offered a re-clean. But as these things understandably took time to arrange & the 4/5 day delay meant we cleaned everything ourselves The advertised broadband did not work for the full week & we had to raise a repair with the supplier. Whilst we appreciate this is a rural area, other properties had functioning wifi Hopefully these issues will be addressed for future clients, appliances replaced, the property inspected & cleaned to an acceptable standard & the cottage could be amazing

Cloam Cottage has been badly neglected by the owners.
To charge £894 for a week shows utter contempt for their guests ( it was £620 in 2021) The positives: quality bedding and towels, hot water, good wifi, good shower, great location in the village and the car park space is invaluable. The negatives: the noise and smells of fish from the extractor fan of the Mote restaurant is unbearable. The owner should contact the council about it! The front of the property and windows are filthy. needs to be cleaned weekly. the description, photos and the star rating are completely out of date. The cottage hasn't been updated for years. The furnishings and cushions are old and dirty. chips on crockery and bread jar. Broken hinges on cupboard doors, fridge shelves broken, toilet roll holder broken. No shower non slip mat - I bought one and left it there! No cleaning materials! not one toilet roll was left. The toilet brushes had no holders! there was no information book in the cottage - what to do with rubbish? recycling? the TV needs replacing and for the rental cost one would expect Netfix or similar. I would not recommend Cloam Cottage and will not be re visiting whilst it is in this condition.
