What our customers say about their holidays

  • Margaret - Verified booking

We arrived earlier at the property and knocked at the door.

As there was no answer we thought the property had been cleaned. We were going to ring the owner immediately and ask as a gesture of goodwill could we put some frozen food in the small icebox as we had been in Ludlow the previous week. We would have left then and returned after the cleaning. The cleaners turned up quite later. We did call the owner on arrival !!! As he wasn't there to see why we had complained, we got the impression he thought we were exaggerating. I did take a photograph. This is the first time we have come across this in all our years of using Sykes Holiday Cottages. The icebox had obviously been left for a couple of weeks and not been defrosted, the door would barely close. it was packed full of ice and blackcurrant spilled in it. The cleaners sorted the icebox and when we got back the fridge was turned off! I'm wondering if it hadn't been brought to the owner's notice, would this had been left again. We then found the kitchen cutlery drawers weren't very clean, the cupboard doors grubby, there was some dirty cutlery. We cleaned them ourselves and cleaned all the cutlery and the dishes. We also wiped the inside of the cupboards. Attention to detail with these cleanliness issues are important. As the owners didn't live nearby it might help if they occasionally came and checked for themselves avoiding negative feedback on important cleanliness issues. The bathroom was cold with one small towel rail. It needs extra heating, particularly in winter. The television kept freezing with a faulty signal. If these issues were addressed then the property would be given more stars. The property was on a very noisy main through road in and out of the town but did not affect our sleep. It eased off in the late evening. There was also a large building site over the road. On the positive side the beds were comfortable and the property was warm. It had a large garden at the back of the property. It was also convenient for a walk into the town. There was a good chip shop a few minutes walk from the property and a nice quiet local pub. If all of these issues were addressed at the property we would return if we were to revisit Bewdley.

My Husband and I stayed at this property for a week following lockdown.

The property is a traditional farmhouse full of character and original features but with modern kitchen and bathrooms. It looks very Impressive as you come over the hill on the approach. It stands in its own large garden overlooking open countryside. There are a couple of other properties nearby yet you are not overlooked. The covered hot tub area is ideal; it is decked out allowing easy access to the large well maintained hot tub. It looked exactly as on the pictures and is a nice private area. It allowed us to spend many relaxing hours looking out at the lovely countryside; even had the privilege of seeing the Tawny Owl flying past (what a bonus). The owl box is in the large tree at the side of the hot tub area so you can hear him hooting around 9pm as he prepares to go off hunting. The house is well kitted out, even a few basic food provisions to get you started. Plenty of logs for the two log burners too. Bedding and towels are of good quality with luxury mattress toppers and pillow protectors. Made for a good nights sleep as the bed was very comfortable. We are keen walkers and the surrounding area provided lots of opportunity for easy or strenuous walks. You can even walk from the door. The owners are really lovely people, very friendly and approachable. Their home is fairly close but your privacy is well respected; they are not at all intrusive. We felt they went to great lengths to ensure our stay was enjoyable; nothing was too much trouble (super hosts in fact

We usually have three or four holidays each year in the UK.

Over the years we’ve never gone back to the same place twice, preferring to explore different parts of the country on our trips away. Lower Hodre is the only exception to this ‘rule’ of ours. We first discovered it in 2019 and loved it so much we booked again for 2020. (The first time we’ve ever done this.). Unfortunately Covid lockdowns scuppered these plans and that holiday was held over until this year - the week we’ve just come back from last Friday. It’s still the most comfortable, luxurious home and tranquil location we remembered so fondly from our previous visit. Emma, the owner, is still the most superb Host: nothing is too much trouble for her and she really does go the extra mile to ensure her guests have anything and everything they need. In short, Lower Hodre is definitely our most favourite holiday let anywhere in the UK. So much so I shall be ringing you tomorrow (Monday September 13th) to book yet another week at this fabulous place for next year. We’re hoping to reserve the week from the 9th to the 16th September in 2022. Now you can’t get a better recommendation than that, can you?!

Lower Hodre is a beautiful house, much of it historic, with beams and nooks and crannies galore.

Nine adults and one greyhound were very comfortable here for a weekend. The house is beautifully decorated and well appointed with fixtures and fittings. The kitchen is a pleasure to cook in, and the hot tub!!! well that was the icing on the cake. Talking of cake, the complimentary home-made cake - and home-made marmalade, and fresh farm eggs - were greatly appreciated. Our host Emma was friendly and helpful and lives in a house which is near Lower Hodre but not so near as to be intrusive. Two wood-burning stoves would keep the house very cosy in winter and the central heating is effective too, though we didn't need it much and ended up turning all the radiators off. The outdoor seating area was welcome when the sun came out, and the garden is a good size, plenty of room for the dog to run around. Lower Hodre is in a very quiet area with only the occasional car or farm vehicle passing down the lane. There are walks around lanes and footpaths right from the front door, through spectacular countryside with red kites circling overhead, sheep in the fields and rabbits hopping around. It's a really beautiful, peaceful place.

I booked Lower Hodre to celebrate my 30th birthday with a group of close friends.

I wanted to stay somewhere secluded, big enough, cosy enough and with a hot tub and enjoy a weekend away in the countryside.... I was not disappointed!! Everyone had an amazing time. Emma, the host, was so accommodating, kind, friendly and welcoming of us into her home. You can tell Emma has a genuine care for her guests and wants them to enjoy their stay in her property which was really lovely to experience. The place was immaculate. Check in was mega easy. I think this was the best hot tub I've been in - extremely clean and maintained very well. Bonus that it was so close to the house and undercover too. There was plenty of space for us all. The house itself was gorgeous. The kitchen was very well equipped too, with all the essentials. I couldn't have picked a better place for us to stay. Emma, thank you so much. I'd love to come back one day! All the best xx
