What our customers say about their holidays

  • Rick - Verified booking

We stayed beginning of Oct 2023.

Incredibly lucky with the weather we had three beautiful days and the remainder of the week was largely dry. Beckaford View was absolutely beautiful, the owners have done a wonderful job in restoring the place and it was lovely to read it's history. The large picture window frames a simply stunning view across the valley. The directions were spot on and easy to follow (we simply used the postcode which brings you out at the top of the drive) The property was spotless & very comfortable.. A lovely shower room, open plan lower floor & nice mezzanine bedroom that takes in the view when you wake up.. The bed was very comfortable and it was a nice/welcome touch to have some milk & drinks packets ready for arrival.. We travelled from Essex so in our case very welcome... The property is at the entrance to Dartmoor we enjoyed spending time with our dog on the moor. Haytor Rocks well worth a visit as was Hound Tor, said to be the inspiration for Hound Of The Baskervilles. Loads of places to explore in and around South Devon which is itself stunning.. The owners provide a really handy visitors book and it was so useful to see where others had ventured out to & then recommended.. I would suggest it should be one of the first things to do as you settle in. A practical thing for the owners to consider.. 1. A mirror for the bedroom, my wife had to stand & plug her hair dryer in the kitchen whilst using the bathroom mirror, so 1 upstairs would have been perfect.. That 1 practical thing aside we loved our stay and had a wonderful week.. We would definitely stay again & we don't say that often.. Highly recommended..

We have stayed here over 14 times.

The property is becoming tired and unloved. Stains on ceilings plaster coming off walls over the floor in lounge and main bedroom. Lack of water pressure in cottage baths and showers difficult as is washing machine which also has dodgy door. Shippon padlocked so no access to any washing machines nor could I get to electrics when power outed many times. Phone not working couldn't contact caretaker spiders and cobwebs in most corners. Mould around many windows stained wood in hall and en suite and lounge. Broken soap dish in shippon bathroom. Filthy fire extinguisher. Out of date PAT test. Chairs with little padding are uncomfortable both log baskets have significant holes burnt ceiling from spotlight lounge. Bathroom "part re tiled" old mismatched tiles still present. Rusty metal heater bathroom. Broken night store heater. Rusty bin bathroom. It's never been perfect and I understand that with a house of that age. In the past we have put up with broken boiler Internet mice piano delivery roof thatchers etc and never complained as we all work in the industry and experience issues but most of this could be delt with so easily. Most annoyingly being banned previously for the woman' on the horse and HER dogs defecating in the yard! We really don't feel that £1700 is a good price for the property it's the most we have paid and the house and facilities are way less than our previous experiences. I have photos of most of the issues should the owner like to see them. I understand management remotely is difficult. I have not shared on social media and look forward to a response.

We all loved the cottage from the minute we arrived.

There was such a lovely homely feel to the place. It was tastefully decorated throughout, with some really lovely paintings on the wall. I loved the quirky touches, the large reindeer sitting in a comfy chair in the lounge, and the group of teddy bears on the landing that varied in age. There were plenty of books to read or some jigsaw you could do. The kitchen was fully equipped to cater for all your needs, with an old table in the middle that you could sit at; the table brought back memories of sitting by a similar table with my grandma. All the rooms were larger than envisaged, so there was plenty of room to relax in. The master bedroom was huge with a triple aspect overlooking the road and the fields. The bathroom was large with a bath and a shower over the bath and there was also a separate shower room with toilet down stairs. The 2 twin rooms were large with plenty of wardrobe space. The lounge had 2 very comfy sofas, a large chair to sit on to watch the TV if you wanted to. There were reference books and maps in the room for guidance. The dining room had a large round table with 6 chairs.another comfy chair and sofa. The garden area was lovely a big table and chairs, where you could watch the birds at the feeders, in the meadow area leading down to the pond was an area with a BBQ and a summer house. The pond is fed by a stream running through it, there was a lifebuoy and a rowing boat. This is definitely a cottage where you can relax and feel right at home.

We had a wonderful, relaxed and comfortable stay at Thorn Cottage over Easter.

Three adults, three children and a dog found that there was plenty to explore - games and books in every nook and cranny, spaces for playing hide and seek, games of cricket in the meadow. Our 7 year old daughter taught herself how to play a couple of simple tunes on the piano. Our dog is a little too much of an explorer to be able to be off the lead in the meadow (we should have named him Houdini!), but enjoyed long morning walks through the lanes. If you’re thinking of bringing a dog with you - be mindful of the hedge at the top of the meadow, it’s an escape opportunity! Short drives (or a hilly walk) to amenities in Chagford: Spar, pubs, greengrocer, clothes, information… We were able to get a few hikes of decent length with our three children. The porch made an excellent boot room upon our return and plenty of hot water for all to have a good shower. The facilities in the kitchen are rustic in a way that is charming, like taking a step back in time. But all mod cons are available, easy to find and use. The beds are extremely comfortable and we all took advantage by sleeping in only to be woken by the sound of birds, the occasional soft sound of hooves or the master thatcher arriving to re-thatch a neighbouring property. We all feel so grateful to have been able to stay at Thorn Cottage and have already recommended that our friends and family also spend holidays there.

We had a lovely time in this amazing property.

However there are some things it would have been nice to know in advance. One expects old houses to be uneven and have sloping floors, and this is part of their charm, but I consider the stairs in this house to be extreme. One member of our party was never going to get up them! The house feels like 'a work in progress' with furnishings and equipment having been randomly brought in from various sources. There was plenty of cooking equipment - for use on the aga! - but a slight lack of crockery, some of which has seen better days and which I would have sent back had it been used in a restaurant. There were 7 in our party. There are 10 chairs in the kitchen, 8 in the sitting room. The cottage, with 2 bedrooms, has 1 x 2 seater sofa, 1 dining chair and 2 small stools. The main garden has 6 chairs. Water pressure is non-existent. Had we been a group of 12, as originally planned, I think that we would have struggled. It is fairly close to Chagford but this is not a pleasant evening stroll to the pub because it is through small lanes and, of course, dark when returning. The housekeeper confirmed that things such as loo rolls, cleaning materials and condiments are available in the house - useful to know when catering. Overall, I repeat, we had a very enjoyable week but I would think very carefully about the party I was travelling with before booking this property again.
